Surgical treatment of asymptomatic severe (>70%) carotid stenosis is controversial. Although recent data suggest that there may be a benefit of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in asymptomatic patients with severe stenosis, this reduction in risk is dependent on a low rate of surgical complications.
