Magnetic resonance imaging to visualize stroke and characterize stroke recovery: a review

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2013
The global burden of stroke continues to grow. Although stroke prevention strategies (eg. medications, diet and exercise) can contribute to risk reduction, options for acute interventions (eg. thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke) are limited to the

One-Year Risk of Stroke after Transient Ischemic Attack or Minor Stroke [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
BACKGROUND Previous studies conducted between 1997 and 2003 estimated that the risk of stroke or an acute coronary syndrome was 12 to 20% during the first 3 months after a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke.

Psychometric properties of the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale (SAQOL-39) in a generic stroke population [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background: We previously developed the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life scale (SAQOL-39) and tested it with people with chronic aphasia. A scale allowing comparisons of quality of life between people with versus without aphasia post-stroke would be of

Categorizing stroke prognosis using different stroke scales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009

Background and Purpose: Stroke severity and dependency are often categorized to allow stratification for randomization or analysis. However, there is uncertainty whether the categorizations used for different stroke scales are

A DIA‐MS‐based proteomics approach to find potential serum prognostic biomarkers in glioblastoma patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
A DIA‐MS‐based proteomics analysis of serum samples from GB patients and healthy controls showed that high levels of IL1R2 and low levels of CRTAC1 and HRG in serum are associated with poor survival outcomes for GB patients. These circulating proteins could serve as biomarkers for the prediction of outcome in patients with GB.

Biophysical characterization and ion transport with cell‐based and proteoliposome reconstitution assays of invertebrate K+‐Cl− cotransporters

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The K+‐Cl− cotransporters (KCCs) facilitate the symport of ions across the plasma membrane. They participate in physiological processes including neuronal regulation. Here, we characterized KCCs from Drosophila and Hydra vulgaris. Comparative analyses of transporters provide insights into the mechanism of KCC ion transport, regulation, and evolution ...
