Paleozoic Stromatoporoid Paleoecology: A Review

Notes for a Short Course: Studies in Geology, 1983
For the non-specialist in stromatoporoid paleobiology, perhaps the greatest interest in these enigmatic organisms is in their potential value in paleoecology; Stearn (1982a) has noted the general preference of stromatoporoids for reef environments as a unifying aspect of the group. Stromatoporoid coenostea are usually obvious in the field but care must

Diagenesis of a stromatoporoid patch reef

Journal of Sedimentary Research, 1984
Abstract At Mustoe, Virginia, four biofacies of the Lower Devonian Helderberg Group, including a 13-m patch reef, are well exposed. A detailed petrographic analysis indicates that these lime sediments were lithified and altered in two subsurface environments.

Stromatoporoids: Affinity with Modern Organisms

Notes for a Short Course: Studies in Geology, 1983
Controversy concerning the affinity of the stromatoporoids is not new; it began over 100 years ago with the first systematic studies of the group. Rosen's (1867) opinion was that these fossils were allied to the sponges. Nicholson and Murie (1878) agreed.

Silurian brachiopods in a stromatoporoid bioherm

Lethaia, 1975
Ludlovian limestone at Ljugarn, Gotland. repreqents a shallow marine environment of stromatoporoid biohenns and flanking areas of mud and stromatoporoid debris. Brachiopods were restricted to surfaces of the debris deposits. Lissatrypa sulcata, a smooth atrypacean, dominated the brachiopod fauna, with individuals living beak downward in high density ...

The Rise, Development and Extinction of Stromatoporoids

1990
When did the oldest stromatoporoid begin? Yavorsky, a Soviet geologist, described in 1932 the Middle Cambrian stromatoporoids: Clathrodictyon and Anostylostroma from western Siberia. Later on, V. Khalfina (1960) acquired some new materials, renamed Anostylostroma vologdini as Praeactinostroma vologdini and designated some species of Clathrodictyon as ...
