Sideband Cooling Micromechanical Motion to the Quantum Ground State
The advent of laser cooling techniques revolutionized the study of many atomic-scale systems. This has fueled progress towards quantum computers by preparing trapped ions in their motional ground state, and generating new states of matter by achieving ...

Estimation of strong ground motions from hypothetical earthquakes on the Cascadia subduction zone, Pacific Northwest [PDF]
Strong ground motions are estimated for the Pacific Northwest assuming that large shallow subduction earthquakes, similar to those experienced in southern Chile, southwestern Japan, and Colombia, may also occur on the Cascadia subduction zone.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Strong Ground Motion Characteristics of the Saturated Loess Site
Significant differences exist in the ground response of saturated and unsaturated deposits to earthquakes, but few relevant studies exist on strong ground motion in saturated loess.

Near-Field Ground Motion Modal versus Wave Propagation Analysis
The response spectrum generally provides a good estimate of the global displacement and acceleration demand of far-field ground motion on a structure.

The Great 1822 Aleppo Earthquake: New historical sources and strong ground motion simulation

Multi-frame scene-flow estimation using a patch model and smooth motion prior [PDF]
This paper addresses the problem of estimating the dense 3D motion of a scene over several frames using a set of calibrated cameras. Most current 3D motion estimation techniques are limited to estimating the motion over a single frame, unless a strong ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

A procedure to select ground-motion time histories for deterministic seismic hazard analysis from the Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) database [PDF]
In performance-based seismic design, ground-motion time histories are needed for analyzing dynamic responses of nonlinear structural systems. However, the number of ground-motion data at design level is often limited.

A literature review on the spectral content of seismic ground motion indicates that a clear predominant frequency in earthquakes is very difficult to define.
