Comparison of earthquake and microtremor ground motions in El Centro, California [PDF]

open access: yes, 1973
Strong earthquake ground shaking has been investigated by the study of 15 events recorded in El Centro, California. The strong-motion records analyzed show that no simple features (e.g., local site conditions) govern the details of local ground shaking ...

Explaining Extreme Ground Motion in Osaka Basin during the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Despite being 770 km away from the epicenter, observed ground motions due to the Tohoku earthquake in the Osaka Basin were unexpectedly large, with an amplification of more than a factor of 20 compared to immediately outside the basin, and including 2.7 ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Properties of strong ground motion earthquakes* [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1955
Summary The analysis given here considers that an earthquake fault is formed by the superposition of a large number of incremental shear dislocations the sudden release of which produces the earthquake. It is postulated that during an earthquake the incremental dislocations are released in such a way that the average slip is proportional

Bridging the gap: Multi‐stakeholder perspectives of molecular diagnostics in oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Although molecular diagnostics is transforming cancer care, implementing novel technologies remains challenging. This study identifies unmet needs and technology requirements through a two‐step stakeholder involvement. Liquid biopsies for monitoring applications and predictive biomarker testing emerge as key unmet needs. Technology requirements vary by

Field tests on total gap of modular expansion joints to avoid bridge pounding

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2016
Modular expansion joints (MEJs) are used for accommodating large relative displacements of adjacent bridge segments and for completely eliminating pounding. However, the minimum total gap that an MEJ needs to avoid pounding is not well investigated.

Engineering multiferroism in CaMnO$_3$

open access: yes, 2008
From first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural instabilities of CaMnO$_3$. We point out that, on top of a strong antiferrodistortive instability responsible for its orthorhombic ground-state, the cubic perovskite structure of CaMnO$_3$

Emerging role of ARHGAP29 in melanoma cell phenotype switching

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study gives first insights into the role of ARHGAP29 in malignant melanoma. ARHGAP29 was revealed to be connected to tumor cell plasticity, promoting a mesenchymal‐like, invasive phenotype and driving tumor progression. Further, it modulates cell spreading by influencing RhoA/ROCK signaling and affects SMAD2 activity. Rho GTPase‐activating protein

The Ruin of the Roman Temple of Kedesh, Israel; Example of a Precariously Balanced Archaeological Structure Used as a Seismoscope

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2017
In certain regions and under favorable geologic conditions, precariously balanced rocks may form. These types of unusual formations have been used to estimate yield ground motions.

Time-frequency representation of earthquake accelerograms and inelastic structural response records using the adaptive chirplet decomposition and empirical mode decomposition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In this paper, the adaptive chirplet decomposition combined with the Wigner-Ville transform and the empirical mode decomposition combined with the Hilbert transform are employed to process various non-stationary signals (strong ground motions and ...
