Directed evolution of enzymes at the crossroads of tradition and innovation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An iterative cycle of data‐driven enzyme optimization comprising four stages: genetic diversification of a template enzyme, expression of protein variants, high‐throughput evaluation, and machine‐learning‐guided redesign of the next variant library.

Elucidating the Structure–Nonlinear Optical Property Relationship of Ethynyl Extended Benzanthrone Chromophores

open access: yesMolecules
Three ethynyl-extended benzanthrone derivatives with benzonitrile (Dye A), thiophene (Dye B), and methyl propiolate (Dye C) as substituents were synthesized and investigated to illustrate structure–property relationships governing their nonlinear optical

Intellectual Property Rights and Competition Policy [PDF]

open access: yes
Intellectual property rights and competition policy are intimately related. In this paper I survey the economic literature analyzing the interaction between intellectual property law and competition law and how the boundary between these two policies is ...

Structure-property relationship in polyethylene composite [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The development of high performance cheetah skin structure for the first time and its use as a filler for polyethylene composite. The huge improvement in mechanical and physical performance of the composite make it a material of choice for different ...

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Transcripts enriched in codons that trigger P‐site tRNA‐mediated mRNA decay possess stable mRNA

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
PTMD codons were first described by Mendel et al. as mediators of an mRNA decay pathway dependent on the human protein CNOT3, homologous to yeast Not5. Our findings confirm that PTMD codons destabilize transcripts; however, unlike in yeast, the human pathway specifically targets and slightly destabilizes primarily stable mRNAs.

Quantitative structure-property relationship models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Preliminarna procjena određenih kemijskih svojstava bez direktne sinteze spoja igra vrlo važnu ulogu u modernoj kemiji. Takva evaluacija smanjuje troškove razvoja novih spojeva potiskujući teoretski neuspješne kandidate koji bi morali biti pripremljeni i

How phagocytic cells kill bacteria: Lessons from a professional killer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
How phagocytic cells ingest and kill bacteria has been studied for more than a century, but many questions remain unanswered. The study of the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum brings new answers, and new questions. Professional phagocytic cells such as neutrophils and macrophages, as well as free‐living soil amoebae like Dictyostelium discoideum, employ

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.
