The micro-structure of use of help

Proceedings of the 27th ACM international conference on Design of communication, 2009
To see whether, from the user's standpoint, muddling through with trial-and-error exploration of the interface actually works as well as consulting help, we analyzed video recordings of 14 subjects using Microsoft Publisher. We segmented their attempts at accomplishing four tasks into episodes, lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes, using four ...

Cointegration and the US term structure

Journal of Banking & Finance, 1994
Abstract Using the maximum likelihood analysis of cointegration developed by Johansen (1988, 1991), we test the cointegration implications of the expectations hypothesis of the term structure on a sample of US pure discount yields. By using this approach, we are able to analyze systems of more than two interest rates simultaneously, as opposed to ...

Sorting using heap structure

International Journal of Computer Mathematics, 2001
In this paper we present a new sorting algorithm for heaps which can sort n (=2 h+1 – 1) elements using no more than nlog2(n+1) – (13/12)n – 1 element comparisons in the worst case 2 (including the heap creation phase). Experimental results show that this algorithm requires only nlog2(n+1) – 1.2n element comparisons in the average case.

A useful data‐structuring technique

Software: Practice and Experience, 1979
AbstractA data‐structuring technique is described which enables data of widely varying types to be stored in a simple tree structure, and which requires only the name of a variable for both its type and value to be retrieved. The method uses well‐established list‐processing concepts in an unusual environment and illustrates the advantages to be gained ...

Structure and Use of ALGOL 60

Journal of the ACM, 1962
ALGOL 60 is a universal, algebraic, machine-independent programming language. It was designed by a group representing computer societies from many different countries. Its primary aims are: (1) simplification of program preparation, (2) simplification of program exchange, and (3) incorporation of the important programming techniques presently known. An

The structuring of systems using upcalls

Proceedings of the tenth ACM symposium on Operating systems principles, 1985
When implementing a system specified as a number of layers of abstraction, it is tempting to implement each layer as a process. However, this requires that communication between layers be via asynchnonous inter-process messages. Our experience, especially with implementing network protocols, suggests that asynchronous communication between layers leads
