Review on Phosphorus Recovery as Struvite from Wastewater
Key Engineering MaterialsWastewater treatment plants, particularly anaerobic digesters, face significant challenges related to the deposition of struvite, a mineral scale composed of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate. The formation and accumulation of struvite can lead to blockages in the treatment system, reducing flow rates and overall plant efficiency.

Phosphorous recovery through struvite crystallization: Challenges for future design
Science of The Total Environment, 2019Phosphorous (P) is an essential element for living organisms and is predicted to be depleted within the next 100 years. Across the world, significant phosphorous losses due to its low utilization efficiency become one of the main reasons for water pollution.

Recovery of struvite via coagulation and flocculation using natural compounds
Environmental Technology, 2014One of the major setbacks of struvite recovery processes is the difficulty in harvesting struvite crystals. This study evaluates the use of different coagulants to improve precipitation of struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H20) crystals. Chitosan and poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) (Poly-DADMAC) as a coagulant-flocculent and alginate and bentonite as a ...

Improving environmental protection and finding sustainable and renewable resources of nutrients are core issues in circular bioeconomy. Thus, this study evaluated the efficiency of recovering struvite, MgNH4PO4·6H2O, from different agro-industrial wastewaters (four highly loaded reject waters of anaerobically co-digested agro-industrial waste and a raw

The effects of urine storage conditions on struvite recovery
2010Phosphorus, like oil, is a non-renewable resource that must be harvested from finite resources in the earth’s crust. An essential element for life, phosphorus is becoming increasingly scarce, contaminated, and difficult to extract. Struvite, or magnesium ammonium phosphate (MgNH₄P0₄.6H₂0) is a white, crystalline phosphate mineral that can be used as a ...

Struvite Recovery from Digested Sewage Sludge
2018Struvite recovery is an ideal way to simultaneously recover phosphate (Pi) and ammonia from digested sludge. A full-scale plant to recover struvite directly from digested sludge was implemented at Higashinada Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) having the sewage treatment capacity of 241,500 m3/day in Kobe City. The struvite recovery plant has a capacity

Mitigation of adverse effects of calcium on struvite biomineralization for phosphorus recovery
Bioresource TechnologyCalcium ions may adversely affect struvite biomineralization, but the exact role remains elusive and the way to eliminate its adverse effect needs to be explored. Herein, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was selected to induce struvite biomineralization. The increase of Ca/Mg ratios from 0 to 2:1 resulted in a decrease of struvite yield from 98.6 mg to 0 mg.

Optimization of Struvite Recovery Utilizing Magnesium Oxide
2022Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternative to magnesium chloride (MgCl2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) used for sidestream struvite recovery from anaerobically digested supernatant (centrate) through the Pearl® process.
