Optimization of bioactive compound extraction from Brazilian forest bark species: effects of solvent mixtures on metal ion chelation and urease enzyme inhibition

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, Volume 20, Issue 1, Page 99-109, January/February 2026.
Abstract The bark of forest species is a resource with a high concentration of bioactive compounds that have antioxidant, chelating and antimicrobial properties. Bioprospecting bioactive compounds from bark can generate income for local communities and contribute to the social and economic development of rural areas, especially in regions where ...

Unveiling Wasps as Potential Pollinators: Floral Traits and Wasp Sociality Intensify Network Centrality in a Highly Diverse Tropical Ecosystem

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 149, Issue 10, Page 1520-1531, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Wasps, members of over 90 hymenopteran families, exhibit diverse behaviours, including pollination, predation and parasitism. While wasps are known pollinators in specialised systems, such as the intricate mutualism of fig trees and the deceptive pollination of certain orchids, they have historically been considered ineffective pollinators ...

Does Propolis Contain Tannins?

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
Although polyphenols have been reported as common constituents of propolis, tannins have rarely been mentioned as its constituents. Propolis samples from seven localities in Brazil were analyzed for detection of proanthocyanidins (condensed tannins) and determination of the tannin content.

Effects of Environmental Changes in Degraded Areas on the Establishment of Plant Communities in the Brazilian Cerrado

open access: yesInternational Journal of Forestry Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Understanding the interrelationships between plant communities and soil attributes in gully erosion can make valuable contributions to strategies focused on the conservation and recovery of degraded areas. Thus, we aimed to evaluate how the composition and structure of different plant communities are affected by soil attributes in a degraded area by ...

The Cost of Self‐Defense: Browsing Effects in the Rare Plant Species Salix arizonica

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2024.
Willows with physical protection from ungulate browsing for multiple years had significantly lower phenolic glycoside (PG) concentration and increased plant height compared to unprotected individuals. In contrast, changes in levels of defense were not observed when plants received protection for only one growing season.
