Growth and characterization of thorium-doped calcium fluoride single crystals
We have grown $$^{232}$$ 232 Th:CaF $$_2$$ 2 and $$^{229}$$ 229 Th:CaF $$_2$$ 2 single crystals for investigations on the VUV laser-accessible first nuclear excited state of $$^{229}$$ 229 Th, with the aim of building a solid-state nuclear clock.

The role of scientific research on nuclear radiation waste management and preserving environment [PDF]
On the level of this article, we deal with nuclear radiation (and their residues), which is defined as a physical phenomenon and strong atomic activity that occurs in unstable atoms of elements.

Dynamical fermions, centre vortices, and emergent phenomena [PDF]
The non-trivial ground-state vacuum fields of QCD form the foundation of matter. Here we examine the centre vortices identified within the ground-state fields of lattice QCD.

Foundations of Quantum Mechanics
Quantum mechanics is a mathematical formalism that models the dynamics of physical objects. It deals with the elementary constituents of matter (atoms, subatomic and elementary particles) and of radiation.

Visual Culture in Quantum Mechanics. Image-based knowledge making in a non-intuitive world
According to a large portion of scholars, mainly coming from the fields of theoretical and experimental physics, quantum mechanics is a particularly challenging subject both to be translated into images and to be communicated without an extensive visual ...

Gas Damping in Capacitive MEMS Transducers in the Free Molecular Flow Regime
We present a novel analysis of gas damping in capacitive MEMS transducers that is based on a simple analytical model, assisted by Monte-Carlo simulations performed in Molflow+ to obtain an estimate for the geometry dependent gas diffusion time.

Units for Atomic and Subatomic Physics [PDF]
The consequences are examined of setting ħ = 1 and c = 1, while retaining the electron volt. The system of units thus defined is simple and practical for atomic and subatomic physics. A convention is also suggested which permits any quantity to be expressed by a number near unity. Trial teaching with such units is suggested.

Visualisations of Centre Vortices [PDF]
The centre vortex structure of the vacuum is visualised through the use of novel 3D visualisation techniques. These visualisations allow for a hands-on examination of the centre-vortex matter present in the QCD vacuum, and highlights some of the key ...

Emergent Structure in QCD [PDF]
The structure of the S U(3) gauge-field vacuum is explored through visualisations of centre vortices and topological charge density. Stereoscopic visualisations highlight interesting features of the vortex vacuum, especially the frequency with which ...

The computational challenge of lattice chiral symmetry - Is it worth the expense? [PDF]
The origin of the low-lying position of the Roper resonance in the nucleon energy spectrum has been the subject of significant interest for many years, including several investigations using lattice QCD.
