Gradation Effects Influencing Mechanical Properties of Aggregate Base–Granular Subbase Materials in Minnesota

Transportation Research Record, 2012
Aggregate gradation effects on strength and modulus characteristics of aggregate base–granular subbase materials used in Minnesota are described. The importance of specifying proper aggregate grading or particle size distribution has long been recognized for achieving satisfactory performance in pavement applications.

Influences of degree of saturation and strain rate on strength characteristics of unsaturated granular subbase course material

Transportation Geotechnics, 2014
The aim of this study is to clarify strength characteristics of a subbase course material changed due to the degree of saturation and the strain rate. A series of monotonic triaxial compression tests was carried out under desired unsaturated and strain rate conditions using a medium-size triaxial compression apparatus.

Rutting prediction in airport pavement granular base/subbase: A stress history based approach

Transportation Geotechnics, 2016
Abstract Test data from full-scale aircraft gear loading conducted at the National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF) by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) were analyzed to investigate the effects of wander (offset loads) and channelized traffic loadings on the deformation behavior of unbound aggregate layers in asphalt pavement test ...

Evaluation of the Federal Aviation Administration methodology for characterizing the nonlinear behavior of granular base and subbase materials

Transportation Geotechnics, 2017
Abstract The major pavement test facility for airfields in the United States is the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This facility is the National Airfield Pavement Test Facility and is housed in a covered hangar on the outskirts of the Atlantic City Airport.

Hypoplastic material constants for a well-graded granular material for base and subbase layers of flexible pavements

Acta Geotechnica, 2007
This paper presents the results of the first phase of a research project dealing with the constitutive description of the behaviour of well-graded granular materials when used for base or subbase layers in flexible pavement structures (so-called “unbound granular materials”, UGMs). Monotonic and cyclic loading is under consideration.

Performance tests on granular base and subbase courses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The FWD is widely used to evaluate elastic moduli of pavement layers by means of the back-analysis whilst it is still difficult to analyse deflection basins on unbound layers: the response of unbound materials departs father from the basic assumptions of the elastic theory; basin deflections measured on unbound layers away from the center of the plate ...

European Research into Granular Material for Pavement Bases and Subbases

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2000
Two transnational European research projects in the area of granular materials for road pavements are described. The results are used to illustrate the state of practice as compared to the state of the art and are placed within the setting of a broad picture of national research within Europe.
