Subchondral bone cysts of the phalanges
Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 1990Subchondral phalangeal bone cysts frequently are encountered when reviewing foot x-rays. Radiologically, these lesions appear as a focus of subchondral radiolucency surrounded by a rim of sclerotic bone. Radiologic and histologic examinations demonstrate that these lesions are identical to the subchondral bone cysts associated with osteoarthritis of ...

This is a report of a subchondral cyst of the entire fibular head in a 24-year-old woman, and a survey of the literature including pathogenesis, histopathology, and management. Subchondral bone cyst in this location seems not to have been reported previously. The treatment was excision of the head of the fibula.

1. The clinical, radiological and pathological features in seven cases of subchondral bone cyst are described. 2. Various hypotheses on the etiology of the lesion are discussed. 3. Although the hypothesis of vascular disturbance is thought to be the most attractive one, it is concluded that study of material from much earlier lesions than that ...

Diseases of Subchondral Bone 1
Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review, 2016The subchondral zone plays an important role in both the structural and biochemical maintenance of articular cartilage. Knowledge of the structure, function, and pathophysiology of the normal subchondral bone/articular surface interface is essential for an understanding of the pathogenesis of many of the disease entities that we will review in this ...

Diseases of Subchondral Bone 2
Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review, 2016Osteonecrosis of the knee can be divided into the following 3 categories: primary or Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK), secondary osteonecrosis (ON), and postarthroscopic osteonecrosis. Patient characteristics as well as underlying risk factors can help categorize the type of osteonecrosis and guide treatment.

The importance of subchondral bone in osteoarthrosis
Current Opinion in Rheumatology, 1998This article reviews evidence that subchondral bone plays a role in the degeneration of cartilage in osteoarthrosis. Whether the bony changes precede the cartilage degeneration remains unproven but may best be considered necessary for progression of the disease.

Osteogenesis in the Subchondral Bone of Rabbits
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1964Osteogenesis was studied in the distal subchondral area of the femur of older but still immature rabbits (four to six months old, weighing approximately two kilograms), using routine histology and autoradiography with tritiated thymidine and tritiated glycine. At this age, the subchondral area in the rabbit is a zone of diverse histological appearance.

Biologics for Subchondral Bone Injuries
Clinics in Sports MedicineSubchondral bone pathology (SBP) includes a wide range of pathologies, including trauma, postcartilage surgery, osteoarthritis, transient bone marrow syndromes, spontaneous insufficiency fractures, and osteonecrosis. They show joint MRI findings termed bone marrow lesions. However, the etiology and evolution of SBP in multiple conditions remain unclear.

Advances in anatomy, embryology, and cell biology, 1998
Pauwels (1965) and subsequent workers in the same field have shown that the distribution of the subchondral density within a joint surface can serve as a parametric measurement which reflects the main stress acting on a joint. Our own investigations on anatomical specimens have demonstrated that this subchondral mineralization does indeed show regular ...
