Centrifugal instability of a Stokes layer: subharmonic destabilization of the Taylor vortex mode

The centrifugal instability of a Stokes layer has been investigated by Seminara & Hall (1976, 1977). It was found that the Stokes layer on a torsionally oscillating circular cylinder is unstable to perturbations periodic along the axis of the cylinder when the Taylor number for the flow exceeds a certain critical value.

New Route to Chaos in Mode-Locked Laser: The Modulated Subharmonic Scenario

We reveal a new route from solitons to chaos in an ultrafast fibre laser: the modulated subharmonic route. We confirm its universality in two different laser configurations (figure-of-eight and ring) and via numerical modelling.

Subharmonic Mode-Locking of Semiconductor Lasers Operating at Millimetre-Wave Frequencies

Optical pulse trains at millimetre-wave frequencies are generated by subharmonic hybrid and subharmonic synchronous mode-locking of monolithic semiconductor lasers. Pulse trains are characterised in terms of timing jitter/phase noise, amplitude modulation, and locking ranges.
