Interference of kallikrein 1b26 (klk1b26) translation by microRNA specifically expressed in female mouse submandibular glands: an additional mechanism for sexual dimorphism of klk1b26 protein in the glands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background Mouse kallikrein 1b26 (klk1b26) protein is more abundant in male submandibular glands (SMGs) than in female ones. This sexual dimorphism has been thought to be due to increased mRNA synthesis stimulated by androgen.

Plexiform neurofibroma of the submandibular gland in patient with von Recklinghausen's disease [PDF]

open access: yesRare Tumors, 2011
Plexiform neurofibroma of the submandibular gland is an extremely rare tumor. Herein, we report a case of plexiform neurofibroma in a patient with a von Recklinghausen's disease (NF-1) who presented with a submandibular mass mimicking a submandibular gland tumor. Complete surgical excision provides the best treatment and final diagnosis.

Differentially Aquaporin 5 Expression in Submandibular Glands and Cerebral Cortex in Alzheimer’s Disease

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2022
Impaired brain clearance mechanisms may result in the accumulation of aberrant proteins that define Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The water channel protein astrocytic aquaporin 4 (AQP4) is essential for brain amyloid-β clearance, but it is known to be abnormally expressed in AD brains. The expression of AQPs is differentially regulated during diverse brain

Giant sialoliths of submandibular gland duct: Report of two cases with unusual shape

open access: yesContemporary Clinical Dentistry, 2013
Giant sialoliths are classified as those exceeding 15 mm in any one dimension. Although, large sialoliths have been described in the body of salivary glands, they are rarely found in the salivary ducts, particularly when the patients have no painful ...

Neurofibromin expression by normal salivary glands

open access: yesHead & Face Medicine, 2021
Introduction Neurofibromin, a protein encoded by the NF1 gene, is mutated in neurofibromatosis 1, one of the most common genetic diseases. Oral manifestations are common and a high prevalence of hyposalivation was recently described in individuals with ...

A Novel Experimental Approach for In Vivo Analyses of the Salivary Gland Microvasculature

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2021
Microvascular dysfunction plays a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of salivary gland disorders. Restoring and preserving microvascular integrity might therefore represent a promising strategy for the treatment of these pathologies.

Review of salivary diagnostics – A current scenario

open access: yesJournal of Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology, 2020
Human saliva is produced by the three major salivary glands (the parotid gland, submandibular gland, and sublingual glands) and minor salivary glands. It contains several hormones, antibodies, cytokines, proteins, enzymes, and antimicrobial constituents ...
