The sounds of submarine volcanoes
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2017When submarine volcanoes erupt, several processes can create sounds in the ocean, mostly at low frequencies <100 Hz. Explosions may occur directly in the water column, while earthquakes and other seismicity may produce seismic waves that convert into hydroacoustic waves or boundary (Scholte) waves.

Mineralized microbes form Giggenbach submarine volcano
2008The Giggenbach submarine volcano, which forms part of the Kermadec active arc front, is located ∼780 km NNE of the North Island of New Zealand. Samples collected from chimneys associated with seafloor hydrothermal vents on this volcano, at a depth of 160–180 m, contain silicified microbes and microbes entombed in reticular Fe‐rich precipitates.
