Enhanced magmatism played a dominant role in triggering the Miocene Climatic Optimum

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment, 2023
The Miocene climatic optimum could have been triggered by coeval increase in magmatism, suggests global carbon cycle simulations constrained by seawater osmium isotope data from Pacific Ocean sediments.

Fish mortality associated to volcanic eruptions in the Canary Islands

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The Canary Islands are an active volcanic archipelago. In the last decade, volcanic activity has occurred twice on the youngest and western most islands: El Hierro (submarine eruption) in 2011-12, and La Palma (subaerial eruption) in 2021.

Hydroacoustic detection of submarine landslides on Kilauea Volcano [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2001
Landslides produced at the site where lava flows into the ocean at Kilauea volcano have been detected hydroacoustically. Up to 10 landslides per day were detected by a hydrophone on the Hawaii Undersea Geo‐Observatory (HUGO), located 50 km south of the entry site.

Large‐Scale Submarine Sediment Waves at Macauley Caldera Volcano: In Situ Evidence of High‐Flux, Syn‐Eruptive Submarine Transport

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Two sediment cores were collected from a submarine sediment wave field on the flank of Macauley volcano. Combined with seismic reflection surveys and numerical modeling, we present an integrated model of the formation of large‐scale, eruption‐fed ...

Near-seafloor magnetic mapping of off-axis lava flows near the Kairei and Yokoniwa hydrothermal vent fields in the Central Indian Ridge [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The Kairei (KHF) and Yokoniwa hydrothermal fields (YHF) are hosted in mafic as well as ultramafic rocks distributed at an off-axis volcanic knoll of the Central Indian Ridge.

Submarine seismicity monitoring with distributed acoustic sensing near Santorini and Kolumbo Volcano

open access: yesSeismica
Submarine volcanoes and faults pose hazards to nearby populated islands, yet their inaccessibility limits monitoring efforts. The Christiana-Santorini-Kolumbo volcanic field is capable of generating devastating eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis.

Submarine depositional terraces at Salina Island (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) and implications on the Late-Quaternary evolution of the insular shelf [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The integrated analysis of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry and single-channel seismic profiles around Salina Island allowed us to characterize the stratigraphic architecture of the insular shelf.

Birth of a Submarine Volcano "Teisi Knoll".

open access: yesJournal of Physics of the Earth, 1991
Frequent sea bottom surveying in an area of earthquake swarms in Sagami Bay about 2 to 3km from the east coast of Izu Peninsula clearly disclosed the birth of a new submarine volcano and processes of its formation. Bathymetric soundings, taken on July 9, 1989, showed that the seafloor, where the new volcano was to be born, was characterized by ...

Ferromanganese nodules and micro-hardgrounds associated with the Cadiz Contourite Channel (NE Atlantic): Palaeoenvironmental records of fluid venting and bottom currents [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Ferromanganese nodule fields and hardgrounds have recently been discovered in the Cadiz Contourite Channel in the Gulf of Cadiz (850–1000 m). This channel is part of a large contourite depositional system generated by the Mediterranean Outflow Water ...

Morphological and Magnetic Analysis of Nieuwerkerk Volcano, Banda Sea, Indonesia: Preliminary Hazard Assessment and Geological Interpretation

open access: yesGeosciences
Nieuwerkerk Volcano, located in the Banda Sea, Indonesia, is a submarine volcano whose entire edifice lies beneath sea level. Its proximity to several inhabited islands raises significant concerns regarding potential impacts from future volcanic hazards.
