Critical turbulence revisited: The impact of submesoscale vertical mixing on plankton patchiness [PDF]
By supplying nutrients to the ocean surface, submesoscale vertical motions can have a strong impact on phytoplankton growth and phytoplankton distributions.

Conventional altimeter satellites, such as TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason series, can identify ocean mesoscale eddies (MEs) but cannot effectively distinguish submesoscale eddies (SMEs) due to horizontal resolution limitations. The emergence of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite has enabled the resolution (or detection) of SMEs.

SAR-Derived Surface Current of Submesoscale Ocean Eddies
A novel method is proposed to calculate the surface current fields of submesoscale eddies accurately. Using the C-Band Doppler (CDOP) model, we first invert preprocessed SAR images to get one-dimensional radial velocity (RVL). Then we improved the Burgers–Rott vortex Model/Stuart vortex solution, and compute the two-dimensional flow field.

Parameterization of Submesoscale Eddy-Rich Flows Using a Stochastic Velocity Model
Abstract In light of the recent high-resolution radar data of surface velocity, which have revealed submesoscale eddies between the Florida Current and the coast, an objective method of detecting eddies and estimating their parameters such as center coordinates, size, and intensity is suggested.

Submesoscale Vertical Heat Flux Amplifies a Cross‐Scale Positive Feedback in the Western Arabian Sea
High‐resolution simulations reveal that summer monsoon‐induced upwelling in the western Arabian Sea triggers vigorous submesoscale vertical heat flux (SVHF), challenging the conventional view of winter‐dominant submesoscale activity in open‐ocean ...

Uncovering Ocean Mixed Layer Dynamics From the Sea Surface State
Submesoscale dynamics strongly influence the upper ocean, regulating mixing, air–sea exchange, and vertical heat transport. The recent Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission provides unprecedented high‐resolution observations of sea surface height ...

Multi-level Drifter-Based Analysis of a Coherent Submesoscale Eddy in the Balearic Sea
Submesoscale eddies are of significant importance for both horizontal and vertical transport of tracers in the ocean, but prior observations lack sufficient spatiotemporal coverage to characterize three-dimensional properties over the course of their ...
