Abstract Vertical motion in the East China Sea is examined using a 1/12.5° regional HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model simulation from 2018 to 2022. Here we present an area of persistent downwelling ∼200 km East‐Northeast of Taiwan where the Kuroshio flows along the continental slope.

Lagrangian and Eulerian characterization of two counter-rotating submesoscale eddies in a western boundary current [PDF]
In recent decades, high-spatial resolution ocean radar and satellite imagery measurements have revealed a complex tangle of submesoscale filaments and eddies, in the surface velocity, temperature, and chlorophyll a fields.

Abstract Mooring observations capture the responses of near‐inertial internal waves (NIWs) to three sequential typhoons (Trami, Yinxing, and Man‐yi) over the Xisha Islands from October to November 2024, using high‐resolution ADCP measurements. Typhoon forcing excites near‐inertial kinetic energy (NIKE) mainly in the 0–100 m layer. Although >90% of NIKE

Drivers of Plankton Distribution Across Mesoscale Eddies at Submesoscale Range
Cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies are common mesoscale features in the flow past the Canary Islands throughout the year. While drifting southward, eddy pairs interact among them but also with upwelling filaments and eddies generated at the coastal jet of ...

Mesoscale and Submesoscale Effects on Mixed Layer Depth in the Southern Ocean [PDF]
Submesoscale dynamics play a key role in setting the stratification of the ocean surface mixed layer and mediating air–sea exchange, making them especially relevant to anthropogenic carbon uptake and primary productivity in the Southern Ocean.

Gulf of Maine Marine Heatwaves in Eddy‐Resolving and Non‐Eddy Resolving Simulations
Abstract Marine heatwaves (MHWs), prolonged periods of anomalously high ocean temperatures, have major ecological and socioeconomic consequences. Predicting these events requires knowing which atmospheric and ocean processes control their onset, persistence, and intensification.

Infrared‐Guided Super‐Resolution of Remotely Sensed Passive Microwave Sea Surface Temperature
Abstract High‐resolution sea surface temperature (SST) is essential for weather forecasting and climate applications. Passive microwave (MW) SST offers largely cloud‐penetrating coverage but is coarse and spatially smoothed, whereas infrared (IR) SST resolves fine‐scale structures but is frequently cloud‐obscured.

Restratification of Abyssal Mixing Layers by Submesoscale Baroclinic Eddies [PDF]
AbstractFor small-scale turbulence to achieve water mass transformation and thus affect the large-scale overturning circulation, it must occur in stratified water. Observations show that abyssal turbulence is strongly enhanced in the bottom few hundred meters in regions with rough topography, and it is thought that these abyssal mixing layers are ...

The Canary Islands region exhibits intense mesoscale activity, with eddies generated south the islands by perturbations of the Canary Current. After detachment, these eddies drift southwestward along the Canary Eddy Corridor (CEC), exporting their ...
