Evaluating SWOT Satellite Data With Gage Information in the United States and Canada

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission represents a transformative approach to water resources management, offering high‐resolution data on water‐surface elevations (WSE) and extents. This study evaluates SWOT WSE accuracy in the United States and Canada with in situ streamgage and lake and reservoir gage data.

Biophysical Submesoscale Processes in the Wake of Hurricane Ivan: Simulations and Satellite Observations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2019
Tropical cyclone induced phytoplankton productivity is examined using a tropical cyclone version of the Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS®). A four-component Nutrient–Phytoplankton–Detritus biological model is integrated into COAMPS to create a fully integrated air-ocean-wave-biology model.

Residence Time of Lagrangian Profiling Floats: Observational Assessment and Numerical Simulation of Station Keeping Ability

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Autonomous profiling floats have revolutionized global ocean observation, yet their passive drift limits their ability to remain within desired regions. Using observations and simulations with numerical ocean models, we quantify observed and potential residence time (RT) of profiling floats and explore station‐keeping strategies.

Observations of tracer ventilation in the Cape Basin, Agulhas Current Retroflection [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science
The Cape Basin is a highly dynamic region, strongly influenced by the Agulhas Retroflection and its associated ring shedding. The region is characterized by high eddy kinetic energy, amplified mixing and water mass transformation.

Airborne Remote Sensing of Upper‐Ocean and Surface Properties, Currents and Their Gradients From Meso to Submesoscales

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
In this work we present a unique set of coincident and collocated high‐resolution observations of surface currents and directional properties of surface waves collected from an airborne instrument, the Modular Aerial Sensing System, collected off the ...

Microbial Respiration Across Subtropical Eddies: Submesoscale Variability and Biogeochemical Drivers

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Island‐induced eddies from the Canary Islands region propagate southwestward along the Canary Eddy Corridor, exporting biological and biogeochemical properties to the oligotrophic open ocean. However, their contribution to organic matter remineralization, and consequently to the biological carbon pump, throughout their life cycle remains ...

Topographic and mixed layer submesoscale currents in the Carribean Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Advancements in observation and modeling techniques have revealed submesoscale structures and processes in the upper ocean with small horizontal scales, characterized by Rossby and Richardson numbers of order one.

Heat transport by anticyclonic submesoscale eddies from the Beaufort Shelfbreak into the Canada Basin

open access: yesGeoscience Letters
Eddies play an important role in the regulation of oceanic heat redistribution. This study investigates and analyzes submesoscale eddies in the upper ocean from the edge of the Beaufort Shelfbreak to the southern Canada Basin using data from the MITgcm ...

Baffin Bay Freshwater Content Seasonal Variability and Budget: A Modeling Approach

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Baffin Bay plays a significant role as an exporter of freshwater from the Arctic to the North Atlantic. However, we still do not completely understand how this freshwater is stored and transformed within the bay before it exits. Here, we use a six‐member ensemble built using the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO)—at 1/4 ...
