From Surface to Depth: SWOT Altimetry and Glider Observations of a Cuddy in the Northeast Pacific

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract California Undercurrent Eddies (Cuddies) transport heat, salt, and biogeochemical properties from coastal regions to the open Northeast Pacific, but their three‐dimensional structure, lateral exchange mechanisms and complete life‐cycle are still not fully understood.

Ocean submesoscale fronts induce diabatic heating and convective precipitation within storms

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
The intensity of atmospheric storms is influenced by ocean temperature contrasts. While mesoscale sea surface temperature anomalies ( ~ 200 km-size) are known to intensify storms via latent heat release, the role of finer oceanic scales remains unknown ...

Analysis of a Permanent Downwelling Zone in the East China Sea Using the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Vertical motion in the East China Sea is examined using a 1/12.5° regional HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model simulation from 2018 to 2022. Here we present an area of persistent downwelling ∼200 km East‐Northeast of Taiwan where the Kuroshio flows along the continental slope.

A Data‐Driven Approach for Parameterizing Ocean Submesoscale Buoyancy Fluxes

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
Parameterizations of O(1−10)km submesoscale mixed layer instabilities in General Circulation Models (GCMs) represent the effects of unresolved vertical buoyancy fluxes (VBF) in the ocean mixed layer.

Contrasting Near‐Inertial Internal Wave Responses to Single Versus Consecutive Typhoons Forcing in the Xisha Islands Waters, South China Sea

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Mooring observations capture the responses of near‐inertial internal waves (NIWs) to three sequential typhoons (Trami, Yinxing, and Man‐yi) over the Xisha Islands from October to November 2024, using high‐resolution ADCP measurements. Typhoon forcing excites near‐inertial kinetic energy (NIKE) mainly in the 0–100 m layer. Although >90% of NIKE

Phytoplankton Responses to Mesoscale and Submesoscale Processes in a Tropical Meander

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans
AbstractThe mesoscale activity of western boundary currents can induce changes in the oligotrophic conditions of the oceanic subtropical gyres. Off SE Brazil, recurrent meanders in the Brazil Current can modulate the pelagic ecosystem through eddy‐induced upwelling, as well as drive coastal upwelling and cross‐shelf exchanges.

Submesoscale processes at the Polar Front in the southwestern area of Svalbard

open access: yesOcean Dynamics
Abstract The global model predictions were used to compare the dynamics and submesoscale processes at the Polar Front (PF) southwest of Svalbard, Norway, in October 2022 and November 2023. The analysis revealed that Rossby numbers rarely exceeded 0.5 in November 2023, whereas multiple instances of Rossby numbers greater than one were ...

Open-ocean submesoscale motions: a full seasonal cycle of mixed layer instabilities from gliders [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The importance of submesoscale instabilities, particularly mixed-layer baroclinic instability and symmetric instability, on upper ocean mixing and energetics is well documented in regions of strong, persistent fronts such as the Kuroshio and the Gulf ...

Submesoscale Eddies Detected by SWOT and Moored Observations in the Northwestern Pacific

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission provides a good opportunity to study fine‐scale processes in the global ocean but whether it can detect balanced submesoscale eddies is uncertain due to the “contamination” by unbalanced inertial ...
