A review of preferential flow and transport through root channels

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal, Volume 25, Issue 5, September/October 2026.
Abstract Preferential flow can contribute up to 80%–90% of the flow and transport in the vadose zone. The root channels are the most prevalent form of preferential pathways. They create an evolving network of preferential pathways and are biogeochemical hotspots due to preferential transport of nutrients and other organics, colonization of bacteria ...

Impact of the Use of Vinasse Sludge on Agricultural Soil and Surface Waters

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 98, Issue 9, September 2026.
Based on 4 years of monitoring and multivariate statistical analysis of 34 physicochemical and microbiological parameters, this study demonstrates that the regulated application of vinasse tank sludge to soil did not promote statistically significant alterations in adjacent surface water quality under continuous environmental control.

CO2 Emissions From Rivers Draining the Tibetan Plateau Reveal Substantial Increases Over the Past 20 Years

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 40, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Inland water CO2 emissions are a critical component of the global carbon cycle, yet their magnitude and long‐term response to climate change remain poorly constrained, primarily because of uncertainties in the air–water CO2 concentration gradient.

Dissolved Organic Matter Composition and Mineral Characteristics Jointly Control Adsorption Processes

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Adsorption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) onto mineral surfaces plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle, influencing carbon stability and sequestration across terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Currently, it remains unclear if mineral properties or DOM composition are more relevant for predicting adsorption.

Structure of Subsoil (degree of limitation)

open access: yes
Structure of subsoil provides an indication of impediments to root, and hence plant, growth due to poorly structured subsoils. Mapping shows the most limiting subsoil structure condition (provided it accounts for at least 30% of a map unit), while ...

Enhanced Dry Season Moisture Recycling in the Congo and Amazon Rainforests

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The rainforests of South America and Africa are considerably reliant on rainfall supplied by evaporation from the rainforests themselves through moisture recycling. Thus, rainforest loss in these areas can reduce evaporation as well as subsequent rainfall in the wider forested region.
