It has been reported that ISAM have an increased risk of SIDS and abnormalities of cardiorespiratory physiology. Abnormalities of cardiorespiratory control may account for the increased SIDS risk in some ISAM, and home monitoring is often used for ISAM with clinical apneic episodes.

The psychological and social issues commonly encountered in drug-abusing pregnant women are also discussed.
