Subsurface State Bilayer in Tetragonal Ferroelectric BaTiO3

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces
The interface is an issue in the ferroelectric field effect transistor. In this work, the study presents a combined characterization of the subsurface structure and the electric polarization of (001)‐oriented and poled BaTiO3 crystal sheets.

First-Principles Investigation of Surface and Subsurface H Adsorption on Ir(111)

open access: yes, 2009
The atomic hydrogen adsorption on Ir (111) surface and in its subsurface with coverage front 0.11 monolayer (ML) to 2 ML is investigated by using density functional calculations with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), the diffusion for ...

A Highly Hydrophilic Air Electrode With Water‐Induced Surface Reconstruction for Efficient Reversible Protonic Ceramic Cell at Low Water Partial Pressures

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates a new strategy for reversible protonic ceramic cells (R‐PCCs). By developing highly hydrophilic oxides, efficient operation is achieved under low water vapor pressures while maintaining high performance and stability. This approach addresses the challenge of hydrogen production in freshwater‐scarce regions.

Residual Stresses Induced by Dry and Cryogenic Cooling during Machining of AZ31B Magnesium Alloy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The major challenge of the Mg alloys has been their unsatisfactory corrosion resistance, which can be enhanced by improving the surface integrity. Cryogenic machining, where liquid nitrogen was used during machining, has been reported to improve the ...

Accelerated Oxygen Evolution Kinetics in Layered Double Perovskites via Hydroxide Surface Engineering for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Our work showcases an innovative approach to address fundamental challenge in AEMWE system by constructing NiFe(OH)x/PBSCF heterostructure via scalable and conformal surface engineering process. Electrical conductivity gradient in the heterostructure increases the OER kinetics by promoting charge transfer, while balancing cation dissolution and re ...

Leveraging Neural Operator and Sliding Window Technique for Enhanced Subsurface Soil Moisture Imputation Under Diverse Precipitation Scenarios

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation
Environmental monitoring and decision‐making are sometimes hampered by missing sensor data, particularly in soil moisture (SM) records that underpin hydrological modeling, agricultural management, and climate studies.

Deep Learning Approaches for Classifying Crack States With Overload and Predicting Fatigue Parameters in a Titanium Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study proposes a deep learning approach to evaluate the fatigue crack behavior in metals under overload conditions. Using digital image correlation to capture the strain near crack tips, convolutional neural networks classify crack states as normal, overload, or recovery, and accurately predict fatigue parameters.

Human‐in‐the‐Loop Swarms: A Bionic Swarm Approach to Real‐World Soil Mapping

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article introduces the “Bionic Swarm,” a novel system that lowers the barriers to real‐world swarm validation by abstracting difficult hardware tasks to app‐guided human agents. We demonstrate the system's utility through the experimental validation of a geotechnical soil‐mapping swarm algorithm and show superior performance to baseline approaches
