On Wind‐Driven Energetics of Subtropical Gyres

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2021
The flow of energy in the wind‐driven circulation is examined in a combined theoretical and numerical study. Based on a multiple‐scale analysis, we find the mesoscale field in the ocean interior is strongly affected by, but does not feed back onto, the ...

Overturning cells in the Southern Ocean and subtropical gyres [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2007
The circulation of the subtropical gyres can be decomposed into a horizontal recirculation along contours of constant Bernoulli potential and an overturning circulation across these contours.

The sensitivity of the Eocene–Oligocene Southern Ocean to the strength and position of wind stress [PDF]

open access: yesClimate of the Past, 2022
The early Cenozoic opening of the Tasmanian Gateway (TG) and Drake Passage (DP), alongside the synergistic action of the westerly winds, led to a Southern Ocean transition from large, subpolar gyres to the onset of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC).

The downward spiralling nature of the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
AbstractThe Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) regulates the heat distribution and climate of Earth. Here we identify a new feature of the circulation within the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre that is associated with the northward flowing component of the AMOC.

Meridional changes in the South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre during Heinrich Stadials

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Subtropical ocean gyres play a key role in modulating the global climate system redistributing energy between low and high latitudes. A poleward displacement of the subtropical gyres has been observed over the last decades, but the lack of long-term ...

Microstructure and composition of marine aggregates as co-determinants for vertical particulate organic carbon transfer in the global ocean [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2020
Marine aggregates are the vector for biogenically bound carbon and nutrients from the euphotic zone to the interior of the oceans. To improve the representation of this biological carbon pump in the global biogeochemical HAMburg Ocean Carbon Cycle ...

Late Holocene Orbital Forcing and Solar Activity on the Kuroshio Current of Subtropical North Pacific at Different Timescales

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
The North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPSTG) redistributes heat and moisture between low and high latitudes and plays a key role in modulating the global climate change and ecosystem.

The link between surface and sub-surface chlorophyll-a in the centre of the Atlantic subtropical gyres: a comparison of observations and models

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Satellite observations have given us a clear idea of the changes in chlorophyll in the surface ocean on both a seasonal and interannual basis, but repeated observations at depth are much rarer. The permanently-stratified subtropical gyres in the Atlantic

Inertia‐induced accumulation of flotsam in the subtropical gyres [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
AbstractRecent surveys of marine plastic debris density have revealed high levels in the center of the subtropical gyres. Earlier studies have argued that the formation of great garbage patches is due to Ekman convergence in such regions. In this work we report a tendency so far overlooked of drogued and undrogued drifters to accumulate distinctly over

Pollutants in Plastics within the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Science & Technology, 2017
Here we report concentrations of pollutants in floating plastics from the North Pacific accumulation zone (NPAC). We compared chemical concentrations in plastics of different types and sizes, assessed ocean plastic potential risks using sediment quality criteria, and discussed the implications of our findings for bioaccumulation.
