Beyond mammals: the evolution of chewing and other forms of oropharyngeal food processing in vertebrates

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Oropharyngeal food processing exhibits a remarkable diversity among vertebrates, reflecting the evolution of specialised ‘processing centres’ associated with the mandibular, hyoid, and branchial arches. Although studies have detailed various food‐processing strategies and mechanisms across vertebrates, a coherent and comprehensive terminology ...

Hemolysis Detected Following the Preparation and Collection of Blood in a Porcine Model Using a Syringe‐Based Aspiration Thrombectomy System for Autotransfusion

open access: yesCatheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Autologous transfusion of filtered, unwashed blood is a technique to mitigate the effects of blood loss during mechanical thrombectomy, but the degree of hemolysis resulting from this approach and guidance for blood return in this setting is not well understood.

Rh‐Catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] Cycloaddition of Linked Bis(Diynes) Ar‐C≡C‐C≡C‐(CH2)3‐C≡C‐C≡C‐Ar With Quinones: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Bis(Arylethynyl)‐Naphthoquinones and Anthraquinones

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
We report the synthesis bis(arylethynyl)naphtho‐ and anthraquinones via Rh(I)‐catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions. The substrate scope of both quinones and linked bis‐diynes was explored. Microwave irradiation remarkably enhanced yields.

A Methodology to Integrate Closed‐Cycle Heat Pumps into Batch Distillation Columns

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
Batch distillation often cannot use vapor recompression due to contamination risks in food and pharma. This study proposes a design for integrating closed‐loop heat pumps using natural fluids. Results show significant energy savings, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional setups.

Dynamic accelerated solvent extraction for faster oil sands oil, water, and solids determination and solids cleaning

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
25 g of oil sands extracted by dynamic accelerated solvent extraction, yielding 177 mL of bitumen–toluene extract and clean dried solids in approximately 12 min. Abstract Determining the oil, water, and solids (OWS) contents of oil sand is essential to many aspects of the oil sands industry including mine planning, optimization of extraction processes,
