Most sudden deaths in industrial nations are the result of underlying coronary artery disease. Longitudinal studies have demonstrated that the percent of all coronary events presenting as sudden death increases with age in both men and women. Relative weight is another important risk factor; the age-adjusted rate of sudden cardiac death for the upper ...

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is defined as unexpected death due to a cardiac disease, in a patient with or without known cardiac disease and which occurs within 1 hour from the appearance of the first clinical symptoms. The sudden cessation of cardiac activity leads to haemodynamic collapse, typically due to sustained ventricular tachyarrhythmias.

Sudden cardiac death in athletes
BMJ, 2015Sudden cardiac death is defined as an unexpected death, occurring usually within one hour from onset of symptoms in cases where the death is witnessed and in un witnessed cases within 24 hours of the individual last being seen alive and well.1 Sudden cardiac death in athletes is the leading cause of medical death in this subgroup, with an estimated ...

DR. WOLF: Any discussion of sudden death has to be somewhat speculative because we are examining it always after the fact. The pathologist is limited in looking for a structural explanation of what is a functional phenomenon. Sudden death implies a cessation in the delivery of oxygen to the brain, a state that can be accomplished in a variety of ways ...

Sudden cardiac death can occur after exposure to extreme stress and sometimes as a complication of acute neurologic disease. Excessive adrenergic stimulation of the heart is most likely the responsible mechanism for the majority of cases of sudden cardiac death.

Thirty-one eminent epidemiologists and cardiologists joined forces to provide an updated understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death. I will highlight a few areas of the book and leave its other important sections for further exploration by readers.

Sudden death from cardiac disease is common, and this section deals with how to confirm the cardiac disease as the cause of the death. It also considers other (noncardiac) conditions that may masquerade as cardiac disease. A pragmatic approach to the common disorders of ischemic heart disease, valvular pathology, cardiomyopathy, and myocarditis is ...
