Entropy in the natural time-domain [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 70, 011106 (2004), 2005
A surrogate data analysis is presented, which is based on the fluctuations of the ``entropy'' $S$ defined in the natural time-domain [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 68}, 031106, 2003]. This entropy is not a static one as, for example, the Shannon entropy. The analysis is applied to three types of time-series, i.e., seismic electric signals, ``artificial'' noises ...

Negative Autopsy in Infant and Juvenile Population: Role of Cardiac Arrhythmias [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Negative autopsy is a post-mortem examination in which a comprehensive analysis does not provide a cause of death. These include situation of death, anatomical and histological analysis, toxicology and microbiological study.

Cardiac Innervation and Sudden Cardiac Death [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation Research, 2015
Afferent and efferent cardiac neurotransmission via the cardiac nerves intricately modulates nearly all physiological functions of the heart (chronotropy, dromotropy, lusitropy, and inotropy). Afferent information from the heart is transmitted to higher levels of the nervous system for processing (intrinsic cardiac nervous system, extracardiac ...

Rapid severe hypertension and organ damage in two‐kidney two‐clip rats produced by different sizes of clips

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Blood pressure increases immediately when the 2K2C rats (made with 0.3, 0.25, and 0.2 mm U‐shaped clips) regain consciousness from anesthesia. 100% of the rats develop hypertension on the day of 2K2C surgery. Blood pressure continues to rise, resulting in severe hypertension and organ damage to the brain, heart, aorta, and kidneys at 1, 2, 4, and 6 ...

Natural entropy fluctuations discriminate similar looking electric signals emitted from systems of different dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E. 71, 011110 (2005), 2005
Complexity measures are introduced, that quantify the change of the natural entropy fluctuations at different length scales in time-series emitted from systems operating far from equilibrium. They identify impending sudden cardiac death (SD) by analyzing fifteen minutes electrocardiograms, and comparing to those of truly healthy humans (H).

Cardiac Innervation and Sudden Cardiac Death [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Cardiology Reviews, 2009
The heart is extensively innervated and its performance is tightly controlled by the nervous system. Cardiac innervation density varies in diseased hearts leading to unbalanced neural activation and lethal arrhythmia. Diabetic sensory neuropathy causes silent myocardial ischemia, characterized by loss of pain perception during myocardial ischemia ...

Noradrenergic and cholinergic innervation of the normal human heart and changes associated with cardiomyopathy

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Autonomic nerves are crucial in cardiac function and pathology. However, data on the distribution of cholinergic and noradrenergic nerves in normal and pathologic human hearts is lacking. Nonfailing donor hearts were pressure‐perfusion fixed, imaged, and dissected. Left ventricular cardiomyopathy samples were also obtained.

Review on Non-Invasive Risk Stratification of Sudden Cardiac Death

open access: yesProceedings of Singapore Healthcare, 2011
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is one of the most significant and challenging problems facing modern medicine today given its unpredictable nature. The evaluation of the patient at risk for sudden cardiac death still remains a complex task.

The Metabolic Syndrome and Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2017
BackgroundPrior studies have demonstrated a link between the metabolic syndrome and increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Whether the metabolic syndrome is associated with sudden cardiac death is uncertain.

Sudden death and sudden birth of entanglement in common structured reservoirs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We study the exact entanglement dynamics of two qubits in a common structured reservoir. We demonstrate that, for certain classes of entangled states, entanglement sudden death occurs, while for certain initially factorized states, entanglement sudden birth takes place.
