Insect immunity in the Anthropocene

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 2, Page 698-723, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Anthropogenic activities result in global change, including climate change, landscape degradation and pollution, that can alter insect physiology and immune defences. These changes may have contributed to global insect decline and the dynamics of insect‐transmitted diseases.

Barley yellow dwarf virus in winter barley: Control in light of resistance issues and loss of neonicotinoid insecticides

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 186, Issue 2, Page 132-142, March 2025.
Winter barley yield is significantly impacted by BYDV. In the absence of neonicotinoid seed dressing, alternative insecticides offer protection for winter barley crops against the aphid vectors of BYDV and associated yield loss. Abstract Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is the most widespread viral disease of cereal crops vectored by aphids, causing ...

Review of the methodology used for the assessment of the short‐term (acute) dietary exposure to pesticide residues in food (IESTI methodology)

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 2, February 2025.
Abstract In accordance with the mandate under Article 43 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA reviewed the methodology used for the assessment of the short‐term dietary exposure to pesticide residues currently used in the EU (also known as international estimated short‐term intake (IESTI) methodology) and elaborated three alternative options for ...

Weight of evidence assessment from field studies on effects of the insecticide sulfoxaflor on hymenopteran pollinators: sulfoxaflor environmental science review part V

open access: yesJournal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part B
Field studies involve combinations of exposure, natural dynamics, and effects in natural and agricultural environments. To be more realistic, field studies focussed on pollinating insects must consider the details of biology, life history, behavior, and pollination ecology of the test species. While expensive and time-consuming, these tests provide the

Properties, mode of insecticidal action, environmental exposure pathways, and uses of the insecticide sulfoxaflor; sulfoxaflor environmental science review part I

open access: yesJournal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part B
Sulfoxaflor (SFX, CAS# 946578-00-3) is marketed by Corteva Agrisciences Inc. as Isoclast®. SFX is a Group 4C, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist and is a systemic insecticide that is most active against sucking insects. This paper critically reviews and characterizes the physical and chemical properties of SFX to facilitate development of ...

Focus on Physico‐Chemical Properties of Sulfoximines: Acidity, Basicity and Lipophilicity

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, Volume 31, Issue 1, January 2, 2025.
Although sulfoximines are emerging entities in chemistry, no physico‐chemical are present in the literature. We disclose here a comprehensive study on the measurement of their acidity, basicity and the determination of their Hansch parameters. Abstract Despite the numerous published syntheses and applications of sulfoximines, very few studies describe ...

Sublethal and transgenerational effects of sulfoxaflor on the demography and feeding behaviour of the mirid bug Apolygus lucorum.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Sulfoxaflor, the first commercially available sulfoximine insecticide, has been used for the control of sap-feeding insect pests such as plant bugs and aphids on a variety of crops. However, its sublethal effects on the mirid bug Apolygus lucorum, one of

Examining the effects of repeated pesticide exposure on bumblebee queen survival and reproduction

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 6, Issue 1, January–March 2025.
Here, we look at the effects of an unstudied, yet biologically likely exposure regime, on bumblebee queens. We found that neither exposure to sulfoxaflor pre‐ or post‐hibernation, nor their combination, impacted hibernation survival or colony foundation.

Peer review of the pesticide risk assessment for the active substance sulfoxaflor in light of confirmatory data submitted

open access: yesEFSA Journal, 2020
The conclusions of EFSA following the peer review of the initial risk assessment carried out by the competent authority of the co‐rapporteur Member State, the Czech Republic, for the pesticide active substance sulfoxaflor are reported. The context of the
