Could Commercially Available Aqueous Binders Allow for the Fabrication of Highly Loaded Sulfur Cathodes with a Stable Cycling Performance?

open access: yesBatteries
In this review, the application of five commercially available aqueous-based binders including sodium carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC), polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as well as some ...

Nontrivial Effects of “Trivial” Parameters on the Performance of Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

open access: yesBatteries, 2018
A robust lithium-sulfur (Li–S) battery is constituted by a wide range of optimized fundamental parameters (e.g., amount of electrolyte, electrolyte additive, sulfur loading density, and the size of sulfur particles). In this paper, some other often-

Upcycling Keratin‐Based Textile Waste Into High‐Performance Hybrid Fibers Via Tuning the Interfacial Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Keratin recovered from animal‐hair textile waste is fractionated and blended with cellulose to produce continuously spun hybrid fibers. Selecting the high‐molecular‐weight keratin fraction enables 30 wt.% keratin incorporation while maintaining high strength in dry and wet states.

Covalent Functionalization of 2D Semiconductors: A Roadmap to Advanced Electronic Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Review presents recent advances in the covalent functionalization strategies for two‐dimensional semiconductors and their implementation in modern technologies. Layered materials are modified through diverse molecular chemistries (e.g., thiols, diazonium salts, alkyl halides, and electron‐deficient species) to tailor their surface properties ...

From coal biodesulfurization to mine-soil remediation: a critical review of microbial sulfur transformation in coal-impacted environments

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology
Coal biodesulfurization has traditionally been regarded as a pre-combustion clean-coal technology; however, its connections to sulfur cycling and remediation in coal-impacted soils have not been sufficiently integrated.

Optimizing NiMo Electrocatalyst Coatings for Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Electrolysis With The Machine Learning‐Guided Autonomous Platform CatBot

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a closed‐loop optimization workflow integrating CatBot, an automated synthesis and testing system, to discover NiMo hydrogen‐evolution catalysts. CatBot synthesised and evaluated 228 unique samples, identifying the best performing catalysts for transfer to nickel‐foam electrodes. The best candidate is highly active, reaching 1 Acm−2${

Charge‐Polarized Ni─S4 Single‐Atom Sites Drive Selective Photoreforming of Poly(lactic acid) to Lactate and Hydrogen

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Atomically dispersed Ni–S4 sites on CdS nanorods induce interfacial charge polarization, directing photogenerated electrons to H2 evolution and holes to selective ester‐bond cleavage of poly(lactic acid). Without sacrificial reagents, this charge‐coupled system produces lactate while suppressing overoxidation, achieving an H2 evolution rate of 41.74 ...

Oxidation of Aqueous Sulfide by Chlorate: Implications for Native Sulfur Formation on Mars

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The recent discovery of native sulfur (“sulfur stones” consist of elemental sulfur) by Curiosity rover in the Gale Crater has sparked considerable research interest toward identifying its formation mechanisms that could generate novel insights into ...

Characterization of chemosynthetic microbial mats associated with intertidal hydrothermal sulfur vents in White Point, San Pedro, CA, USA

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
The shallow-sea hydrothermal vents at White Point (WP) in Palos Verdes (PV) on the southern California coast support microbial mats and provide easily accessed settings in which to study chemolithoautotrophic sulfur cycling.
