Selim I who is son of Bayezid II was the ninth sultan of Ottoman Empire. During the reign which lasted eight years (1512-1520) Selim I wrote poems, and patronized the poets. The Ottoman sultans supported the poets since the foundation of the Ottoman Empire. The purpose was to raise the cultural level of the state.
