Ubiquitin‐like SUMO protease expansion in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

open access: yesThe Plant Genome, Volume 19, Issue 1, March 2026.
Abstract SUMOylation is a protein post‐translational modification that is essential for plant growth and response to changing environments. However, past work in this area has mainly focused on simple sequence similarity methods for discovering SUMOylation genes, often using orthologue mapping from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) or Arabidopsis ...

Phosphatidylinositol transfer protein α binds microcolins in its open conformation

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section D, Volume 82, Issue 3, Page 246-252, March 2026.
We report the crystal structure of human PITPα in complex with microcolin H at 2.0 Å resolution, revealing that microcolins bind covalently within the lipid‐binding cavity and stabilize PITPα in an open conformation with a markedly enlarged cavity relative to the lipid‐bound state.

Hypomethylating agents in vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X‐linked, autoinflammatory, somatic syndrome (VEXAS): A systematic review

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, Volume 208, Issue 3, Page 819-828, March 2026.
Summary VEXAS syndrome (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X‐linked, autoinflammatory, somatic) is an X‐linked, systemic, haemato‐inflammatory syndrome caused by somatic mutations in the UBA1 gene. No standardized treatment guidelines exist, but evidence is emerging that treatment with hypomethylating agents (HMAs) can induce improvement of the inflammatory symptoms,

Structural analysis of the NifL‐NifA complex reveals the molecular basis of anti‐activation of nitrogen fixation gene expression in Azotobacter vinelandii

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 6, Page 1643-1663, March 2026.
Understanding the molecular basis of nitrogen fixation is essential for engineering bacteria that fulfill the nitrogen demand of crop plants, reducing our reliance on synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. The bacterial two‐component system comprising the anti‐activator protein (NifL) and the Nif‐specific transcriptional activator (NifA) controls the nitrogen

Cas9 beyond CRISPR – SUMOylation, effector‐like potential and pathogenic adaptation

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 5, Page 1285-1296, March 2026.
This Viewpoint explores the possibility that Cas9, beyond its canonical role in CRISPR immunity, may act as a host‐modulating effector during infection by Cas9‐encoding bacteria. Such a nucleomodulin‐like function could be influenced by eukaryotic post‐translational modifications, particularly SUMOylation, with potential implications for host–pathogen ...
