Contrasting Space Weather Drivers of Two Geomagnetically Induced Current Events in Alberta, Canada During the May 2024 Superstorm

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Strong geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) caused by intense space storms induce geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in the Earth and within long conductive infrastructure, potentially posing risks to electricity transmission systems. Here, we investigate the solar wind conditions and magnetospheric processes responsible for two significant ...

Solar and stellar flares and their connection [PDF]

open access: yes
This thesis focuses on bridging the gap between solar and stellar physics through the study of flares. Solar flares are the most powerful explosions in the solar system and many stellar flares have been observed to be orders of magnitudes larger ...

High Latitude Thermosphere and Ionosphere Density Response to the May 2024 Geomagnetic Storm Observed by the LLITED CubeSat Mission

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract The May 2024 G5 geomagnetic storm produced significant disturbances in the ionosphere and thermosphere, particularly at high latitudes. Using high‐resolution in situ ion and neutral density measurements from the NASA Low‐Latitude Ionosphere/Thermosphere Enhancements in Density (LLITED) CubeSat at 430 km altitude, this study documents notable ...

Muon Flux Fluctuations and Solar Phenomena Using Regional Geomagnetic Indices With a Cosmic Ray Detector in Mexico City

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract The data from a cosmic ray (CR) detector in Mexico City were collected over a period of 2 years from September 2023 to September 2025, during the maximum phase of Solar Cycle 25. The CR detector consists of an array of scintillators and measures the muonic component of secondary CRs.

Statistical Study of Geoeffective Fe XV 28.4 nm Emission Bursts and Their Influence on Ionospheric Total Electron Content During the Late Phase of Solar Flares

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Recent studies have demonstrated that warm coronal emissions during the extreme ultraviolet late phase (ELP) of X‐class solar flares can be sufficiently strong to also affect electron density in the Earth's ionosphere. The Fe XV 28.4 nm line was identified as one of the most geoeffective emissions produced during the ELP.

A New Model of Cutoff Latitude for Solar Energetic Protons Based on the Partial Least Squares Method

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Solar energetic particle (SEP) events can cause space weather hazards, especially at high altitudes and in the polar regions. Therefore, it is important to determine the boundaries that SEPs with different energies/rigidities can access and impact. In this work, we develop a new model of cutoff latitude for solar energetic protons covering the
