Daily Minutes of Unprotected Sun Exposure (MUSE) Inventory: Measure description and comparisons to UVR sensor and sun protection survey data

open access: yesPreventive Medicine Reports, 2018
One in five US adults will be diagnosed with skin cancer. As most skin cancers are attributable to sun exposure, this risk factor is an important target for research and intervention. Most sun exposure measures assess frequency of specific sun-protection

Determination Of Sun Protection Factor By Uv-Vis Spectrophotometry

open access: yesHealth Care : Current Reviews, 2016
Background: Sunscreen products contain active ingredients that can absorb, reflect or scatter the sunlight, depending on their nature. We can evaluate the effectiveness of a sunscreen by determining the sun protection factor (SPF). This SPF should be specific for each phototype, so as to the protection against the damaging effects of UV rays may be the

1D Light‐Emitting MAPbBr3 Perovskite Encapsulated in Carbon Nanotubes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Encapsulation of MAPbBr3 perovskite in single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) yields a hybrid nanomaterial with distinctive optoelectronic properties. Perovskite confinement induces a unified single‐peak photoluminescence (PL) with a reduced lifetime, while charge transfer alters the optical properties of nanotubes.

Built‐In Electric Field in 2D/2D LDH/Antimonene Heterostructure to Induce Stable β‐NiOOH at Ultralow Potential for Cost‐Effective Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this paper, a built‐in electric field (BEF) strategy is proposed to fabricate NiFe‐LDH/antimonene heterostructure as bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The formed BEF generates a local potential that reduces the potential for the formation of β‐NiOOH, thereby enabling ultra‐low ...

Chitosan Nanoparticles with Encapsulated Natural and UF-Purified Annatto and Saffron for the Preparation of UV Protective Cosmetic Emulsions

open access: yesMolecules, 2018
The aim of the present work is to evaluate the preparation of sunscreen emulsions based on chitosan (CS) nanoparticles with annatto, ultrafiltrated (UF) annatto, saffron, and ultrafiltrated saffron. Ionic gelation was used for the preparation of chitosan

Self‐supportive Three‐Way Photoelectrochemical System Achieving Uranium Recycling, Organic Oxidation, and Electricity Generation in Complex Waters

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐sustaining solar photoelectrochemical cell (SS‐PEC) is developed to recover uranium from aqueous UO22+ with concurrent organic oxidation and electricity production. The monolithical photoanode directly captures electrons from organic compounds, leading to the oxidation of organic compounds and the decomposition of uranium‐organic complexes ...

Asymmetric Nanofiber Membranes for Simultaneous Moisture Adsorption and Rapid Catalytic Hydrolysis of Nerve Agent Simulants in Atmospheric Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Asymmetric nanofiber membranes are constructed for simultaneous moisture adsorption and catalytic hydrolysis of dimethyl 4‐nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) in a wide range of relative humidity. The membrane exhibits high moisture adsorption capacity and fast hygroscopic rate.

Sun Protection Policy in Elementary Schools in Hawaii

open access: yesPreventing Chronic Disease, 2004
Introduction Childhood sun exposure is a major risk factor for skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in the United States. Schools in locations that receive high amounts of ultraviolet radiation have been identified as important sites for reducing ...
