A Hemispherical Sun Sensor for Orientation and Geolocation
IEEE Sensors Journal, 2014We propose a novel sensing system with a hemispherical arrangement of light intensity sensors to determine the vector to the dominant light source in its environment. We apply this system to the measurement of sun vector. The accuracy of our sensor is proved to be scalable when using more sensing pixels.

A prototype micro Sun sensor has been developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. It consists of a thin piece of silicon coated with a layer of chrome and a layer of gold with hundreds of small pinholes, placed on top of an Active Pixel Sensor (APS) image detector at a distance of 900 microns.

Fuzzy image processing in Sun sensor
10th IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems. (Cat. No.01CH37297), 2002Sun sensors are widely used in spacecraft attitude determination subsystems to provide a measurement of the Sun vector in spacecraft coordinates. At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, there is an ongoing research activity to utilize Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) processes to develop a smaller and lighter Sun ...

MEMS based sun sensor on a chip
Proceedings of 2003 IEEE Conference on Control Applications, 2003. CCA 2003., 2004A prototype sun sensor has been developed. It consists of a thin slice of silicon coated with a layer of chrome and a layer of gold with hundreds of small pinholes, placed on top of an active pixel sensors (APS) image detector at a distance of 500 microns. Images of the sun are formed on the APS image detector when the sun illuminates the mask.

Micro digital sun sensor: system in a package
Proceedings. 2004 International Conference on MEMS, NANO and Smart Systems, 2004. ICMENS 2004., 2004A novel micro Digital Sun Sensor ( µDSS) is under development in the frame of a micro systems technology (MST) development program (Microned) from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. Use of available micro system technologies in combination with the implementation of a dedicated solarcell for power supply and a wireless link for data communication ...

2013 IEEE SENSORS, 2013
We present an optical localization chip capable of detecting the direction of incident light. The chip requires no offchip optical or mechanical components or post-processing (e.g. baffles, slits, mirrors, etc.). The chip was fabricated in a standard 0.5 μm CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) process.

A cost-effective micro sun sensor based on black sun effect
2017 IEEE SENSORS, 2017A cost-effective micro sun sensor is presented for extracting the sun vector from image sensors based on a phenomenon called the black sun. The black sun, appearing as the result of electron overspill at an oversaturated CMOS image pixel when capturing a bright spot such as the sun, allows extracting the sun centroid accurately and robustly even when ...

In-Orbit Calibration Method for Sun Sensor Based on Sun Ephemeris and Star Sensor
2017An in-orbit calibration model has been adapted to improve the sun sensor’s in-orbit accuracy. This model consists of 2 sub-models. One is the measurement model of the sun sensor, the other is pseudo measurement model. In the measurement model, variety of in-orbit factors have been taken into consideration, and the measurement model has been modified to

Design and Fabrication of an Albedo Insensitive Analog Sun Sensor
A sun sensor is usually included in a satellite for optically measuring the position relative to the sun. The accuracy of a conventional sun sensor is affected by reflected sunlight at the nearby earth atmosphere: the albedo radiation.

Abstract The High Accuracy Sun Sensor (HASS) is described, concentrating on measurement principle, the CCD detector used, the construction of the sensorhead and the operation of the sensor electronics. Tests on a development model show that the main aim of a 0.01" rms stability over a 10 minutes period is closely approached.
