Sun sensors have been widely used as a part of spacecraft attitude determination subsystems to provide a measurement of the Sun vector in spacecraft coordinates. An experimental MEMS based Sun sensor is presented. This prototype sun sensor is comprised of a silicon wafer mask with several hundred small apertures placed on top of a CCD focal plane array

Micro-Digital Sun Sensor: An imaging sensor for space applications
2010 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2010Micro-Digital Sun Sensor is an attitude sensor which senses relative position of micro-satellites to the sun in space. It is composed of a solar cell power supply, a RF communication block and an imaging chip which is called APS+. The APS+integrates a CMOS Active Pixel Sensor (APS) of 512×512 pixels, a 12 bit Analogue to Digital Converter (ADC ...

MEMS optical position sensor for sun tracking
2015 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), 2015We demonstrate a sun tracking sensor fabricated in the MultiMEMS SensoNor process. The sensor uses a quadrant photodetector to determine the position of a projected shadow. Differential measurement of pairs of photodiodes allows simultaneous dual-axis readings.

Design of Optical Position Sensor for Sun Tracking
Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Intelligent Information Processing, 2017We demonstrate an optical position sensor for sun tracking. The sensor uses a linear CCD to detect the position of the rays of the sun, by which the incidence angle of the sun is calculated. In order to improve the measurement accuracy, the weighted barycenter algorithm in grayscale is adopted.

Rotation estimation for a satellite from Sun sensors
2013 European Control Conference (ECC), 2013We develop a method to reconstruct the rotation motion of a satellite from Sun sensor measurements. Mathematically, the estimation objective is formulated as the problem of phase reconstruction for a 2-dimensional periodic function. A computationally straightforward solution is proposed.

Modeling and simulation of a commercial medium sun sensor
The Fourth International Conference on Control and Automation, 2003. ICCA. Final Program and Book of Abstracts., 2003Sun sensors are widely used in spacecraft attitude determination and control systems (ADCS), while an analytical model of a sun sensor would help in spacecraft ADCS design, analysis, and simulation. This paper derives an analytical model of a commercial medium sun sensor, which, to the knowledge of the authors, has not been seen in literature.

Micro digital sun sensor with linear detector
Review of Scientific Instruments, 2016In this paper, the design of a novel micro digital sun sensor is described. It relies on V-shaped slit and linear array CCD to measure sun-ray angle against two axes. A highly integrated microprogram control unit) is used to make a very simple and compact system. V-shaped slit can simplify algorithm and achieve a wider field of view. Error compensation

A photodiode based miniature sun sensor
Measurement Science and Technology, 2017The solar vector is one of the most important parameters for attitude control of nanosatellites. This attitude control must be achieved without the sensors adding significantly to its size or mass. This paper presents a photodiode-based miniature sun sensor, which consists of two triangular pyramidal sensor unit structures, with each unit comprising ...
