Ultra‐Effective Light‐Activated Antibacterial Activity via Carboxyl Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots and Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Carboxyl‐functionalized graphene quantum dots (cGQDs) exhibit high singlet oxygen quantum yield due to strong spin–orbit coupling. cGQDs achieve minimum bactericidal concentration of only 0.4 µg mL−1 against S. aureus under low‐intensity illumination.

A Close Look at the Local Structure of Functional Polymers: The Example of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
To accurately develop structure‐property relationships in functional macromolecules, it is increasingly important to consider the local chain arrangement in addition to long‐range order. It is demonstrated in the case of poly(vinylidene fluoride) that solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy can provide detailed insights into the local

Evaluation of 'Sun Protect' in protecting apples (Malus × domestica Borkh.) against sunburn

open access: yesHorticultural Science, 2016
Sunburn is a major type of solar radiation injury that leads to significant economic losses in several fruits, including apples. Here, the efficiency of a new product, called 'Sun Protect', in protecting apples (cv.

Stratum Corneum‐Inspired Zwitterionic Hydrogels with Intrinsic Water Retention and Anti‐Freezing Properties for Intelligent Flexible Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A novel stratum corneum‐inspired zwitterionic hydrogel is developed for intelligent, flexible sensors, featuring intrinsic water retention and anti‐freezing properties. The quasi‐gel, composed of hygroscopic polymers and bound water, maintains its softness across a wide range of humidity.

Could a nearby supernova explosion have caused a mass extinction?

open access: yes, 1993
We examine the possibility that a nearby supernova explosion could have caused one or more of the mass extinctions identified by palaeontologists.

Enhancing UV Stability and Charge Extraction in Organic Solar Cells with Phenyl‐Linked Aromatic Self‐Assembled Monolayer

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The phenyl‐linked self‐assembled monolayer exhibits robust intrinsic stability and hole extraction capability compared to the alkyl‐linked counterparts, thus facilitating the device stability with T80 over 1000 h and efficiency of 19.7% in advancing organic solar cells.
