Performance of Coated Extra-Large Hulled Confectionary Sunflower Kernels for Precision Planting

Agricultural Research, 2017
Extra-large (XL) confectionary sunflower seeds are too large to plant with current precision planters, and a high proportion of seed does not emerge upon planting. Hulling the XL seeds and then coating the kernels has been proposed to improve the viability and plantability of these seeds. Therefore, the objectives were to evaluate the effect of various

Autohydrolysis-explosion as pretreatment for the enzymic saccharification of sunflower seed hulls

Biotechnology Letters, 1983
Autohydrolysis of sunflower seed hulls at 200°C for 5 min followed by explosive defibration solubilized >80% of the total hemicellulose (heteroxylan) and 85% of the pectic substances. The remaining residue, which consisted of cellulose (38%), lignin (45%) and residual heteroxylan (7%), was highly susceptible to hydrolysis by cellulases (Trichoderma ...

A Bench-scale Unit for Continuous Extraction of Red Colorant from Sunflower Hulls

Transactions of the ASAE, 1993
The continuous, countercurrent solvent extraction of anthocyanin pigment from purple-hulled sunflower was investigated with the object of developing a simple, inexpensive process which could be easily scaled to larger capacities. The pigment is believed to have commercial potential as a natural red food colorant.

The Mathematical Description of Sunflower Seed’s Hulling Process Using Impact Huller

2016
This work aims to describe mathematical model of Sunflower Seed’s Hulling process. Exactly, the movement of sunflower seeds inside rotor is described by equations of motion as a function of time.

Evaluation of Shearing Rolls for Hulling Confectionary Sunflower Seed for Precision Planting

Applied Engineering in Agriculture, 2014
The planting of sunflower seed has always used intact inshell seed. However, consumer demand for extra-large (XL) confection sunflower seed has led to new hybrid varieties, and much of the seed is now too large for current planting technologies and has poor germination. One alternative may be to use hulled kernels.
