The Supercavitating Pump

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1973
Cavitation in conventional pumps can cause loss of efficiency and erosion damage. For these reasons speeds and suction pressure are limited to avoid these effects. There are, however, applications where, for technical or economic reasons, these limitations are not acceptable. For these, the supercavitating pump has been developed.

Choking and Supercavitating Valves

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1971
The occurrence of choking flow or supercavitation downstream of valves can result in unsatisfactory performance. A valve chokes when the mean pressure immediately downstream drops to vapor pressure. For a given upstream pressure, the maximum discharge through the valve has been reached.

Flexible Wedges in Supercavitating Flow

Journal of Ship Research, 1982
A linear theory is developed to model the steady supercavitating flow about a very slender wedge which can deform under the pressure distribution associated with the flow. The resulting static wedge deformation, drag, and cavity length show physically reasonable changes from previous work where the wedge is not allowed to bend to accommodate the flow ...

Modeling the Supercavitation Processes

International Journal of Fluid Mechanics Research, 2001
Problems on modeling the supercavitation processes in relation to the shape and dimensions of supercavities, formation and maintenance of them are considered in the article. Necessary dimensionless parameters responsible for the considered process: the cavitation number a, the Froude number Fr, and the Weber number We are established.

Ballistics of Supercavitating Projectiles

30th International Symposium on Ballistics, 2017
An ordinary gun projectile will, after entry into water, be subject to an extremely high drag and will stop after 50 – 100 calibers of travel through the medium. To avoid such a response, supercavitation must take place. By a specially shaped projectile nose, the flow of water around the projectile may escape contact with the surface of the projectile,

An Experimental Investigation of Artificial Supercavitation

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2016
In this paper, we investigated physical characteristics of an artificial supercavity generated behind an axisymmetric cavitator. Experiments for the same model were carried out at two different cavitation tunnels of the Chungnam National University and the University of Minnesota, and the results were compared and verified with each other.

Analysis on the Stability of Supercavitation Projectile

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012
Owing to the existence of supercavition affect the trajectory as well as the stability of motion of projectile. So modeling and controle problems for supercavitation prjectile are complicated and important. The paper analysed the hydrodynamic of supercavitation projectile.

Bifurcation Behavior of a Supercavitating Vehicle

Applied Mechanics, 2006
In this effort, a numerical study of the bifurcation behavior of a supercavitating vehicle is conducted. The nonsmoothness of this system is due to the planing force acting on the vehicle. With a focus on dive-plane dynamics, bifurcations with respect to a quasi-static variation of the cavitation number are studied.

Supercavitating pumps for cryogenic liquids

Cryogenics, 1972
Abstract Pumps for cryogenic liquids have a number of special mechanical and insulation problems because of the low temperatures. In addition there can be hydrodynamic problems due to trying to pump the liquid near its boiling point c causing cavitation.

Modeling and Control of Supercavitating Vehicle

30th International Symposium on Ballistics, 2017
A supercavitating vehicle dynamic model is introduced based on the piecewise linear planing force function through the nonlinear planing force of a supercavitating vehicle, which is a four dimensional piecewise linear system and its dynamic characteristics (such as the equilibrium point and stability) are analyzed.
