Comparative Analysis of Work Function Measurement Techniques Based on Scanning Probe Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 38, Issue 45, 13 August 2026.
Non‐contact scanning probe microscopy visualizes the surface topography based on surface electronic properties. The tunneling current, which defines the geometry of the tunnel–junction, has to overcome the effective surface work function barrier to reach the probe from the surface.

Symmetry‐Restricted Energy Landscapes as a Benchmark for Machine Learned Interatomic Potentials

open access: yesAdvanced Theory and Simulations, Volume 9, Issue 8, August 2026.
We present a benchmark for assessing the physical accuracy of machine‐learned interatomic potentials. By constructing two‐dimensional potential energy surface slices along symmetry‐allowed degrees of freedom and comparing them with DFT, the benchmark reveals model strengths, weaknesses, and artifacts, providing an easily interpretable test of energy ...

Controllable Ge Hut Wires With Mobilities Exceeding 20 000 cm2 V−1 s−1

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, Volume 12, Issue 15, 10 August 2026.
The controlled growth of germanium hut wires on patterned SiGe/Si(001) substrates is reported. These self‐assembled nanowires achieve a record hole mobility of 22 900 cm2 V−1 s−1 at 4.2 K. Remarkably, conductance quantization is observed at a channel length of 1.9 µm, highlighting their exceptionally low disorder and paving the way for scalable, high ...

Field‐Programable Dynamics in a Soft Magnetic Actuator Enabling True Random Number Generation and Reservoir Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 8, Issue 8, August 2026.
Complex dynamics, often avoided in electromechanical design, can enhance soft robotics. We develop durable magnetic soft actuators operating in tunable dynamic regimes, enabling random number generation, stochastic computing, and time‐series prediction.
