Superconducting fault current limiters

IEE Colloquium on High Tc Superconducting Materials as `Magnets', 1995
Fault current limiters (FCLs), superconducting or otherwise, have the potential to reduce fault levels on electricity power networks, and may ultimately lead to lower rated components (i.e. cheaper) being used, or to increased capacity on existing systems.

Recent progress of superconducting fault current limiter in China

Superconductors Science and Technology, 2020
With the increase of electricity demand and the rapid development of renewable energy generation, it is becoming more and more important to ensure the safety and stability of power grid, where a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) could play an ...

Design and Performance Test of a 20-kV DC Superconducting Fault Current Limiter

IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity, 2020
A resistive-type dc superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is developed for the fault current limiting at the Suzhou Nami substation. The rated voltage and current are 20 kV and 400 A, respectively.

A superconducting fault-current limiter

Journal of Applied Physics, 1978
A conceptual design is presented for a fault-current limiter for the electrical power utilities which utilizes a superconducting element to commutate the fault current into a shunt resistor. The technical feasibility of the concept is supported by a computer simulation of the switching.

Design and Test of 40-kV/2-kA DC Superconducting Fault Current Limiter

IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity, 2020
In this article, a general scheme of a 40-kV/2-kA resistive type dc superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is suggested, which could be utilized to suppress the surge current caused by short-circuit faults in voltage-source-converter HVdc (VSC-HVdc)

Non‐superconducting fault current limiters

European Transactions on Electrical Power, 2008
AbstractThis paper proposes the use of non‐superconducting DC reactor type fault current limiter (NSFCL) instead of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) which has high cost and technology. Proposed FCL consists of three similar sets, each including a diode bridge and a single non‐superconducting DC reactor.

Conceptual Design of a Saturated Iron-Core Superconducting Fault Current Limiter for a DC Power System

IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity, 2020
A superconducting fault current limiter can significantly reduce the stress on the DC circuit breaker in DC power systems due to its inherent physical characteristics that can quickly limit the fault current.

DC superconducting fault current limiter

Superconductor Science and Technology, 2006
There is a lack of satisfying solutions for fault currents using conventional technologies, especially in DC networks, where a superconducting fault current limiter could play a very important part. DC networks bring a lot of advantages when compared to traditional AC ones, in particular within the context of the liberalization of the electric market ...

Current limiting tests of a prototype 160 kV/1 kA resistive DC superconducting fault current limiter

Superconductors Science and Technology, 2020
High voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission technology has begun to play a great role in power transmission industry over the last decade. However, short-circuit fault seriously threatens the safety of an HVDC network.
