From muscle fibres to muscle gears: how dynamic fascicle orientation and shape change impact skeletal muscle function

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Skeletal muscle architectural design strongly affects force‐generating capacity and excursion range, and its functional importance to animal and human movement is well founded. Traditionally, this ‘structure–function relation’ has been inferred from architecture measurements with muscles at rest (from anatomical dissections or medical imaging ...

Challenges in meeting the mass transfer demands of high‐density perfusion cultures in single‐use bioreactors

open access: yesBiotechnology Progress, EarlyView.
Abstract Increasing protein therapeutics production by adopting intensified perfusion cultures places high demand on the mass transfer capabilities of single‐use bioreactors (SUB). Here, we compare these capabilities for four SUB designs against worst‐case O2 transfer requirements for supporting Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) perfusion cultures. Impact of

Donor‐To‐Recipient Mean Axonal Count Ratios of Upper Limb Nerves Used in Nerve Transfer Surgery: A Systematic Review of Histomorphometric Cadaveric Studies

open access: yesClinical Anatomy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Nerve transfer surgery may be performed to restore sensorimotor function following peripheral nerve trauma or dysfunction. There is biological plausibility and limited correlative evidence that donor‐to‐recipient axon count ratios may impact functional outcomes.

Benefits of Sensory Nerve Transfers and Risks of Using the Superficial Radial Nerve as a Donor

open access: yesThe Journal of Hand Surgery
Nerve transfers have re-emerged in the past several decades as a powerful tool for restoration of neurological function and are an essential part of peripheral nerve surgical practice. There is extensive literature describing outcomes from nerve transfers for the restoration of motor nerve function and describing the complication profile.

Comparison of modelling approaches for liquid fluidized beds

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract This study presents a comparison of three promising numerical models for the detailed simulation of liquid–solid fluidized bed. These models differ in their treatment of the solid phase, ranging from treating each particle individually to treating the collection of particles as a continuum.

Electrical resistance tomography for process intensification of gas–liquid stirred tanks: A comparison of linear back projection and sensitivity conjugate gradient algorithms

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Monitoring gas–liquid dynamics using Electrical resistance tomography for process intensification in stirred tanks Abstract Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) is a non‐invasive technique widely applied to the study of multiphase flows, where phases exhibit different electrical properties.

Applying of external fixator in the distal radius An anatomic study in cadaver forearms

open access: yesActa Orthopaedica et Traumatologica Turcica, 2021
We performed an anatomic study in 16 cadaver forearms to determine the safety of percutaneous proximal pin placement for external fixation of distal radius fractures. Two 3mm. cortical pins were placed along the dorsoradial ridge 8 cm.

A Biosourced and Self‐Healable Polymer Electrolyte for Potassium Batteries

open access: yesEcoEnergy, EarlyView.
A biosourced lignin‐filled gel polymer electrolyte combines suppressed crystallinity, high ionic conductivity, and UPy‐driven self‐healing for potassium batteries. The optimized formulation sustains long‐term cycling with 97.5% capacity retention after 1000 cycles and preserves electrochemical operation after intentional membrane damage.
