Anatomy of the superior hypogastric plexus and its relevance to anterior lumbar interbody fusion.
Journal of Neurosurgery : SpineOBJECTIVE Retrograde ejaculation (RE) is a known complication of anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and results from injury to the superior hypogastric plexus (SHP) during intervertebral disc exposure.

Coaxial imaging technique for superior hypogastric plexus block
Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, 2000Previously described techniques for superior hypogastric plexus (SHP) block are technically difficult. A simple coaxial imaging technique for SHP block is described.Fluoroscopic guidance for coaxial approach to SHP block is described. A successful block is easily achieved.A new approach to SHP block is described, which is technically effective.

Superior hypogastric plexus block is utilized to diagnose and treat sympathetically-mediated visceral pain originating from the pelvic organs. Diagnostic blocks serve to evaluate pelvic and rectal pain syndromes, and are used as a prognostic marker prior to neurolytic blocks of the plexus.

Superior Hypogastric Plexus Block for Pelvic Cancer Pain
Anesthesiology, 1990Blockade of the superior hypogastric nerve plexus was performed for relief of chronic cancer related pelvic pain. The targeted sympathetic nerves lie anterior to the sacral promontory. Twenty-eight patients with neoplastic involvement of pelvic viscera secondary to cervical, prostate, and testicular cancer or radiation injury were treated with ...

The Optimal Approach for a Superior Hypogastric Plexus Block
Pain Practice, 2017AbstractIntroductionSuperior hypogastric plexus block (SHGPB) is technically difficult, and an accurate procedure is required to avoid potential complications. We attempted to determine the reference angles for fluoroscopy‐assisted SHGPB and to establish a predictor as a guide to select the optimal approach between the classic posterior approach and ...

Superior hypogastric plexus block and ganglion impar (Walther)
Techniques in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management, 2005The superior hypogastric plexus is formed by pelvis visceral afferents and efferent sympathetic nerves from branches of the aortic plexus, and fibers from the splanchnic nerves. Pelvic viscera innervated by the superior hypogastric plexus include the bladder, uterus, vagina, prostate, testes, urethra, descending colon, and rectum.
