Factors associated with metachronous metastases and survival in locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1172-1179, December 2020., 2020
Surgery for locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer can achieve good survival outcomes. Some histopathological features significantly increase the number of metachronous metastases and shorten survival. Presentation with a synchronous metastasis that is treated successfully significantly increases the number of metachronous metastases and shortens

Surgery for multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1‐related insulinoma: long‐term outcomes in a large international cohort

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 11, Page 1489-1499, October 2020., 2020
In this cohort of 96 patients with resected multiple endocrine neoplasia 1 (MEN1)‐related insulinomas, seven patients (7 per cent) developed postoperative persistent or recurrent hypoglycaemia after a median follow‐up of 8 years. The 10‐year hypoglycaemia‐free survival rate was 91 (95 per cent c.i. 80 to 96) per cent.

Meta‐analysis of the impact of postoperative infective complications on oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer surgery

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 737-747, October 2020., 2020
Postoperative infective complications have significant negative effects on oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer. Anastomotic leakage has a negative effect on every measured outcome. New registries should include oncological outcomes and complications to facilitate future research and optimize outcomes.

Propensity score regression analysis of oesophageal adenocarcinoma treatment with surgery alone or neoadjuvant chemotherapy

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 4, Page 593-600, August 2020., 2020
Following propensity adjustment for stage, age and sex, neoadjuvant therapy was not associated with survival. Tumour regression is a powerful prognostic indicator, and future research should focus on identifying patients who will derive the most benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Liver transplantation for unresectable colorectal liver metastases in patients and donors with extended criteria (SECA‐II arm D study)

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 467-477, June 2020., 2020
Patients with extensive liver tumour load and a mainly poorly differentiated N2 primary tumour have short overall survival from the time of liver transplantation. Relapses were mostly unresectable and the patients had short survival from the time of relapse. These patients should not be offered liver transplantation.

Effect of intraperitoneal chemotherapy concentration on morbidity and survival

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 2, Page 293-300, April 2020., 2020
Owing to differences in abdominal volume, intraperitoneal chemotherapy concentrations vary up to tenfold in patients treated with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. However, this variation was not associated with postoperative morbidity or survival.

Value of individual surgeon performance metrics as quality assurance measures in oesophagogastric cancer surgery

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 91-100, February 2020., 2020
Annual surgeon‐level metrics demonstrated the greatest variation (fivefold) risking inappropriate target thresholds. Surgeon‐level performance metrics were not associated with survival, suggesting that compound‐level quality assurance provides better overall performance appraisal.
