Surgery for multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1‐related insulinoma: long‐term outcomes in a large international cohort

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 11, Page 1489-1499, October 2020., 2020
In this cohort of 96 patients with resected multiple endocrine neoplasia 1 (MEN1)‐related insulinomas, seven patients (7 per cent) developed postoperative persistent or recurrent hypoglycaemia after a median follow‐up of 8 years. The 10‐year hypoglycaemia‐free survival rate was 91 (95 per cent c.i. 80 to 96) per cent.

Meta‐analysis of the impact of postoperative infective complications on oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer surgery

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 737-747, October 2020., 2020
Postoperative infective complications have significant negative effects on oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer. Anastomotic leakage has a negative effect on every measured outcome. New registries should include oncological outcomes and complications to facilitate future research and optimize outcomes.

Ki67 expression at Kasai portoenterostomy as a prognostic factor in patients with biliary atresia

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 873-883, October 2020., 2020
No consensus exists for predicting outcomes after Kasai portoenterostomy (KP) using liver histological findings. Ki67 (clone, MIB‐1) expression in liver parenchyma was measured by means of immunohistochemical staining of samples from five living donors and 35 patients with biliary atresia to assess its value in predicting KP outcomes.

Early operative management in patients with adhesive small bowel obstruction: population‐based cost analysis

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 914-923, October 2020., 2020
This population‐based cost–utility analysis compared early operative management (EOM) for adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO) to the current standard of care of a trial of non‐operative management. Although EOM was more costly, it was associated with a significantly lower risk of recurrence and reduced exposure to the morbidity and costs associated ...

Impact of extent of disease on 1‐year healthcare costs in patients who undergo cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for colorectal peritoneal metastases: retrospective observational cohort study

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 954-962, October 2020., 2020
Well selected patients with colorectal peritoneal metastases can be treated with curative intent by cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Treatment‐related healthcare costs are significantly increased among patients with extensive peritoneal disease, although the associated survival gain is limited.
