Surf-riding and Broaching—A Numerical Investigation on the Vulnerability of Ships

2020
International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) recent discussion on the development of second-generation intact stability criterion has emphasized on the instability problems like surf-riding and broaching of ships. Surf-riding and broaching occur when a ship rides in astern seas with the ship velocity close to the wave celerity.

Influence of GM on Surf-Riding and Broaching of the Fishing Vessel

2020
The influence of GM on surf-riding and broaching of the ITTC A2 fishing vessel (Length between perpendiculars: 34.5 m, Breadth: 7.60 m, Draught: 2.65 m) are investigated using a 6-DOF numerical model. The numerical model is validated by comparisons with the model experiment provided in the literature.

Riding the Wave: History, Definitions, and a Proposed Typology of Surf-riding Tourism

Tourism in Marine Environments, 2012
Surfing has evolved from a fringe counterculture recreational activity to a multibillion dollar global industry with a diverse range of equipment and millions of participants. The growth and influence of surfing, in its myriad of forms, has not been widely researched and is scarcely reported in the aca- demic literature.

Definitions of Celerity for Investigating Surf-Riding in an Irregular Seaway

2019
As is well-known, if the speed of a ship operating in high, fairly regular, following waves exceeds wave celerity, then surf-riding is realized. This motivates one to approach the calculation of the probability of surf-riding in irregular seas as a threshold exceedance problem.

The influence of wave surge force on surf-riding/broaching vulnerability criteria check

Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2017
Abstract This study focuses on the influence of the wave surge force on the assessments of the surf-riding/broaching vulnerability criteria according to the new proposal of the IMO Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria. A code is developed for the criteria check and the sample ship calculations show that the accuracy of the wave surge force ...

Application of surf-riding and broaching criteria for the systematic series D models

Ocean Engineering, 2018
Abstract The Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria (SGISC) have been introduced after the occurrence of stability-related accidents, which clearly demonstrated that “actual” intact stability criteria were not adequate. New generation criteria are based on the physical and failure mode analysis of parametric roll, pure loss of stability, surf ...

Correction of wave surge forces to improve surf-riding/broaching vulnerability criterion check accuracy

Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong University (Science), 2017
Surf-riding/broaching is one of the five stability failure modes to be included into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) second generation intact stability criteria (which are risk-based stability criteria) that can ensure the safety of ships in actual seaways more effectively.

Analytical formulae for predicting the surf-riding threshold for a ship in following seas

Journal of Marine Science and Technology, 2010
Making use of Melnikov’s method, a generalized formula for predicting the surf-riding threshold is developed as an extension to the applications of Kan and Spyrou. A new analytical formula for calculating the surf-riding threshold of a ship in following seas is also proposed in light of nonlinear dynamical system theory.

Successful surf-riding on size spectra: the secret of survival in the sea

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 1994
All ecosystems require constituent species to survive against a backcloth of biotic and abiotic scenery. How this scenery shapes the life-history strategies of the players and how they in turn shape the scenery are important themes of the play of life.
