CFD simulations for surf-riding occurrence assessment

open access: yesOcean Engineering, 2020
Surf-riding phenomenon occurs when a ship sailing in following waves is accelerated to wave celerity. In this paper, surf-riding occurrence is studied for the parent hull of the Systematic Series D by 3 degrees of freedom (DOF) CFD simulations. Simulation cases are chosen following IMO recommendations for a wavelength to ship length range and following

Analytical formulae for predicting the surf-riding threshold for a ship in following seas

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Technology, 2010
Making use of Melnikov’s method, a generalized formula for predicting the surf-riding threshold is developed as an extension to the applications of Kan and Spyrou. A new analytical formula for calculating the surf-riding threshold of a ship in following seas is also proposed in light of nonlinear dynamical system theory.

Surf-riding and oscillations of a ship in quartering waves

Journal of Marine Science and Technology, 1995
The behavior of a ship encountering large regular waves from astern at low frequency is the object of investigation, with a parallel study of surf-riding and periodic motion paterns. First, the theoretical analysis of surf-riding is extended from purely following to quartering seas. Steady-state continuation is used to identify all possible surf-riding

Modeling of Surf-Riding in Irregular Waves

Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications, 2019
Surf-riding is an important phenomenon for the evaluation of ship dynamic stability, as it is related to one of the principal mechanisms of broaching-to. The evaluation of the probability of surf-riding in irregular waves is a necessary step toward determining the probability of broaching-to following surf-riding.

Evidence against surf-riding as a general mechanism for surface motility

Cell Motility, 1984
AbstractThe mechanism responsible for the energy‐dependent movement of membrane components (ie, surface motility) is unknown. Recently a potentially unifying model, termed “surf‐riding” [Hewitt, 1979] or “surf‐boarding” [Berlin and Oliver, 1982], has been proposed to explain surface motility.

Definitions of Celerity for Investigating Surf-Riding in an Irregular Seaway

Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications, 2019
As is well-known, if the speed of a ship operating in high, fairly regular, following waves exceeds wave celerity, then surf-riding is realized. This motivates one to approach the calculation of the probability of surf-riding in irregular seas as a threshold exceedance problem.
