The Impact of Horizontal Resolution on Surface Irradiance Over Land in km‐Scale Earth System Models
Abstract Storm‐resolving global climate models, approaching km‐scale grid spacings, are slowly emerging. With increasing horizontal resolution, we expect improvements in the surface radiation budget because (a) synoptic variability may be better represented, (b) convective systems are better resolved, and (c) landscape heterogeneity is represented in ...

Community-driven variations in snow algae color modulate snow albedo reduction. [PDF]
Summary Snow algae blooms visibly alter snow color and surface energy balance, yet the biological basis of this variability remains unclear. We investigated how pigment composition and community structure shape the optical properties of snow algae blooms of distinct colors – red, orange, and green – co‐occurring within the same snowfield in Glacier ...

Abstract We investigate the 1D reflectance distribution of shallow cumulus as a function of cloud size, using high‐spatial‐resolution observations from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). Reflectance transects through clouds are compared between Inner Mongolia and Tropical Ocean.

Cold Pools Reduce the Impacts of Deforestation on Convection Initiation
The individual and synergistic impacts of cold pools and land surface heterogeneity on convection initiation are investigated using idealized large eddy simulations. (a) Storms form more frequently over forested regions, but cold pools (blue shading) can assist in initiating storms over deforested areas.

We provide a geomorphological analysis of Cordillera Vilcanota and use morphostratigraphic principles to reconstruct palaeo icefield extent and palaeoglacier readvances, likely during the Antarctic Cold Reversal and Younger Dryas. We find evidence of temperate and polythermal ice margins, with limited glaciofluvial landform generation.

Field Observations of Ice Melt and Decay to Constrain Lake Ice Model Parameterizations
This study collected and analysed in situ observations of ice decay in a subarctic lake to assist modellers in better constraining melt season lake ice model parameterization schemes. Findings showed that decay was driven by thermal and mechanical processes.
