Theory of anchoring on a two-dimensionally grooved surface
Physical Review E, 2008We investigate analytically the anchoring of a nematic liquid crystal on a two-dimensionally grooved surface of arbitrary shape, induced by the elastic distortions of a liquid crystal adjacent to the surface. Our theoretical framework applied to a surface with square grooves reveals that such a surface can exhibit bistable anchoring, while a direct ...

Undulations in a confined lamellar system with surface anchoring
Physical Review E, 2001We visualize undulations in layered systems using a cholesteric stripe phase with a macroscopic supramicron periodicity. The wave vector of stripe pattern is in the cell's plane. The undulation is induced by an in-plane magnetic field normal to the stripes.

Cell‐surface engineering with GPI‐anchored proteins
The FASEB Journal, 1996Protein engineering of cell surfaces is a potentially powerful technology through which the surface protein composition of cells can be manipulated without gene transfer. This technology exploits the fact that proteins that are anchored by glycoi‐nositol phospholipids (GPIs), when purified and added to cells in vitro, incorporate ...

Nematic surface transitions induced by anchoring competition
Physical Review E, 1996The interface properties of a nematic Liquid crystal in contact with a solid substrate are investigated by considering the effect of a position dependent external field on a short range nematic-substrate interaction. Such a field could be due, for instance, to the van der Waals interaction between the substrate and the nematic, or to the electrostatic ...

Computational Mapping of Anchoring Spots on Protein Surfaces
Journal of Molecular Biology, 2010Protein-protein and protein-peptide interactions are often controlled by few strong contacts that involve hot spot residues. Computational detection of such contacts, termed here anchoring spots, is important for understanding recognition processes and for predicting interactions; it is an essential step in designing interaction interfaces and ...

A molecular trio anchors RNAs on the cell surface
Molecular CellRNAs are now recognized as functional components of the cell surface, expanding the molecular repertoire of the plasma membrane. In this issue of Molecular Cell, Li et al. reveal a mechanism for RNA anchorage via heparan sulfate and show that these surface RNAs can modulate receptor-ligand interactions.

Cell Surface Dynamics of GPI-Anchored Proteins
1997Several cell surface eukaryotic proteins have a glycosylphosphoinositol lipid (GPI) modification at the carboxy-terminal end that serves as their sole means of membrane anchoring. In this report we review recent observations regarding the surface dynamics of GPI-anchored proteins. We discuss the association of GPI-anchored proteins with caveolae at the

Anchoring properties of substrate with a grating surface
Chinese Physics, 2007The anchoring properties of substrate with a grating surface are investigated analytically. The alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a grating surface originates from two mechanisms, thus the anchoring energy consists of two parts. One originates from the interaction potential between NLC molecules and the molecules on the substrate surface ...

Geometrical anchoring at an inclined surface of a liquid crystal
Physical Review A, 1992The free energy of a nematic film, placed between two isotropic media, does not depend on the azimuthal angle if the two interfaces are parallel. It is shown that in the general case of nonparallel bounding, a particular value of the azimuthal orientation is energetically preferable.
