Computational Analysis on the Performance of Elongated Liquid Crystal Biosensors

open access: yesMicromachines, 2023
Elongated ellipsoidal liquid crystal microdroplet reorientation dynamics are discussed in this paper for biosensor applications. To investigate the effect of elongated droplets on nematic liquid crystal droplet biosensors, we simulated a model of a ...

Stresses and strains on the surface of anchors [PDF]

open access: yesRevue Française de Géotechnique, 1978
Pull-out resistance tests on cylindrical ground anchors with small diameters (5 to 15 cm) show a high bearing capacity not derivable from the overburden pressure. To investigate this fact full scale tests were performed measuring skin friction (τrz = — τzr ) and normal stress (σr ) on the anchor surface (rough) with the help of installed cells ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Bistable nematic liquid crystal device with flexoelectric switching

open access: yes, 2006
Motivated generally by potential applications in the liquid crystal display industry [8,35], and specifically by recent experimental, theoretical and numerical work [6,7,13,14,21,25,30,31], we consider a thin film of nematic liquid crystal (NLC ...

Effects of Photopatterning Conditions on Azimuthal Surface Anchoring Strength

open access: yesCrystals
Spatially varying alignment of liquid crystals is essential for research and applications. One widely used method is based on the photopatterning of thin layers of azo-dye molecules, such as Brilliant Yellow (BY), that serve as an aligning substrate for ...

A Simple Method to Avoid Brain Shift during Neuronavigation: Technical Note

open access: yesBrazilian Neurosurgery, 2021
Introduction The precise identification of anatomical structures and lesions in the brain is the main objective of neuronavigation systems. Brain shift, displacement of the brain after opening the cisterns and draining cerebrospinal fluid, is one of the ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

New polypyridine anchoring ligands for coordination complexes and surface functionalization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This PhD thesis focuses on the synthesis of new polypyridine anchoring ligands and several dfferent applications. The ligands consist of a coordinating part, a flexible linker and an anchoring group. Due to the fact that different anchoring groups were

Development of an Anchoring System for the Soft Asteroid Landing Exploration

open access: yesInternational Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2019
The landing mechanism is easy to flow away from the surface of the asteroid, as there is nearly no gravity on the asteroid. One of the most problems for the asteroid landing exploration is to anchor the landing mechanism on the asteroid surface.
