Anchoring energy or surface melting in nematic liquid crystals?

open access: yes, 1991
The influence of the spatial variation of the scalar order parameter on the anchoring energy is analysed. It is shown that if the nematic average orientation is forced to change too rapidly, a surface melting is expected.

Q&A of liquid crystal alignment: theory and practice

open access: yesFrontiers in Soft Matter
We selected and summarized the most important aspects of liquid crystal alignment. Alignment by the surface profile and flat surface alignment are discussed as the main factors leading to the high-quality orientation of liquid crystals.

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Cerebellum morphogenesis: the foliation pattern is orchestrated by multi-cellular anchoring centers

open access: yesNeural Development, 2007
Background The cerebellum has a striking morphology consisting of folia separated by fissures of different lengths. Since folia in mammals likely serve as a broad platform on which the anterior-posterior organization of the sensory-motor circuits of the ...

Super‐Refractory Status Epilepticus (SRSE) in a Patient With Compound Heterozygous OPA1 Variants: Case Report and Literature Review

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Super‐Refractory Status Epilepticus (SRSE) is a rare, life‐threatening neurological emergency with unclear etiology in many cases. Mitochondrial dysfunction, often due to disease‐causing genetic variants, is increasingly recognized as a cause, with each gene producing distinct pathophysiological mechanisms.

Didodecyldimethylammonium Bromide Role in Anchoring Gold Nanoparticles onto Liposome Surface for Triggering the Drug Release [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Liposomes with their capacity to anchor gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto their surface are used in the treatment of several pathologies such as cancer. The objective of this work was the optimization of the vesicle composition by using cationic agents in ...

Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathy due to Biallelic Pathogenic Variants in PIGM

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective PIGM encodes a critical enzyme in the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)‐anchor biosynthesis pathway. While promoter‐region mutations in PIGM have been associated with a relatively mild phenotype characterized by portal vein thrombosis and absence seizures, recent evidence suggests that coding‐region mutations result in a more severe

Modeling of weak anisotropic anchoring of nematic liquid crystals in the Landau-de Gennes theory

open access: yes, 2007
The anisotropic anchoring effect of a treated solid surface on a nematic liquid crystal is described in the Landau-de Gennes theory using a power expansion on the tensor-order parameter and two mutually orthogonal unit vectors.

Analogue grey level in SSFLCD by varying surface anchoring

open access: yes, 1999
In this paper we present a new possibility to obtain analogue grey level in surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal displays (SSFLCD). Our simulation results show that the switching time under certain applied voltage can be changed by varying the

Influence of surface anchoring and viscosity upon the switching behavior of twisted nematic cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Numerical calculations are presented on the dynamics of twisted chiral nematic cells. We are emphasizing the influence of surface effects on the optical switching behavior.
